A Key to Being Smart

Don't ask a question the instant it pops into your mind.  First, look at the data in front of you.  Second, scan your internal data.  See if you can figure out the answer yourself.  Meanwhile, someone else may have asked the question you had in mind; if so, you can listen to the answer, and request clarification if necessary.

If none of those things happens ... <i>ask the question</i>.  Do so even if it seems like a silly question.  Chances are, a bunch of other people are thinking the same question, but may not feel comfortable asking.

The more you ask, the more you learn.  If you are persistent about acquiring both data and problem-solving routines, you will need to ask fewer questions over the years and/or seek out more challenging fields.  But never stop asking questions altogether.
