Poem: "Vessel of Dreams" - The Wordsmith's Forge

Poem: "Vessel of Dreams"

Here is the second freebie poem of the day, courtesy of new donors wcg and xjenavivex.

wcg recently directed my attention to this essay on courage and space exploration, and I've been mining it for inspiration ever since.  Seriously, if you write science fiction, you need  to read that essay.  arielstarshadow suggested the sonnet form.

Vessel of Dreams
-- a sonnet

There is a reason why we call ships "she"
And name them for our goddesses and loves.
They are the vessels of our dreams, the gloves
In which our hands touch futures yet to be.

The first to stretch a skin across a frame
And ride "her" on the water must have been
Called mad -- but he was first  to sail and then
To watch new waters swallow sun in flame.

With aircraft, "she" grew finer, time and oft
Containing once again our dreams and us.
The shuttle brought a stronger impetus;
We cried "her" name who carried us aloft.

We call her "she," acknowledge her alive --
The anima  who spurs our human drive.

Re: You're welcome!

I'm sitting here re-reading it again. It's beautiful prose, and so very true.

This is lovely, and marvelously crafted - and yay for the sonnet!
