Hungry Birds

The woodpecker has continued to return several times a day, drilling away at the suet feeder on my office window.  I got a slightly better snapshot of him.

I keep hoping to catch him perched on one of the bushes, but he only stays there for a few seconds.  He's on the feeder by the time I can point my camera at him.

Today, the weather is cold and snowy.  A small flock of sparrows has discovered the feeder.  They're more numerous and more rambunctious, so today my view is full of bird crotches and fanned tails and much squabbling.  They're fun to watch, though.

I've seen the woodpecker once today, so far -- the sparrows gave him the right-of-way without a fuss.

... the suet cage is hung against the window, so they can't eat off the side that I see. When they eat off the front, that mostly means their little feathered bellies are pointed toward me. And when they fight, or the wind blows and they flounder for a grip, there is a lot of tail-spreading and flailing around with their skinny legs. Since none of them are wearing panties, what they got is what I see.

At some point, I would like to try birdwatching with the good camera. Unfortunately, my best views of the local birds are all through crummy windows, which tends to make for lousy shooting. *ponder* Though I might try for a trip out to Douglass-Hart Nature Center sometime this year. They have a heavy-duty feeding station outside a clear picture window, and I got some awesome shots in autumn. Today would be perfect but I'm tired after the holidays and have much other stuff to do.
I hear you...I need to get to packing!

When I get back to KC, I'm hoping to be able to afford to get a Zoo Friends membership. I love that place; feel so comfortable there and could write and meditate and get good exercise at the same time.
That would be so cool. If I lived close enough to a zoo, I would do that. Someday when I have money again, I should go and take my notebook with me, and spend a day writing as I wander.
