I think America's current wars, plural, are wrong and stupid and should be stopped immediately. However, I'm in favor of war bonds. I greatly prefer war bonds to a war tax. This is because bonds are voluntary expenditures while taxes are involuntary. War bonds are therefore an excellent way to measure public support for a war. If people run out and buy lots of bonds, it means they support the war and you can go on merrily blowing people to hell in sublime confidence that your countrymen want you to do it. War bonds for a popularly supported war tend to sell like hotcakes. Conversely, if the war bonds sell poorly or not at all, this indicates that We The People disapprove of the wars and do not wish to spend money on them -- so that the wars should be stopped. I would greatly hope for the latter, but I do believe in playing fair. Let's let the warhawks put their very own, personal money where their beaks are.
Mary Susan Littlepage | Nelson Proposes War Bonds to Fund Wars Mary Susan Littlepage, Truthout: "Working to help fund ongoing wars without sharp tax increases or increased foreign borrowing has led Nebraska's Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Nebraska) to introduce a new measure Tuesday: the US War Bonds Act of 2009. The legislation would authorize the Treasury to issue and market War Bonds to the American people to help pay for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq."
