Global Warming Is Real

My partner Doug sent me this link for an article on global warming. The lead is long, but there's some valid stuff farther down.

The climate is warming. It is almost certain this is caused by emissions of greenhouse gases caused by human activity. Nobody has come up with an alternative explanation that stands up. If the present warming trend continues, nasty things will probably start happening to humans within the next century, possibly the next decade. Something must be done. If nothing is done, then the benign climatic conditions that have sustained human civilisation for 10,000 years are in danger of collapse to be replaced by… well, write your own disaster movie.

Every time you make another post about how global warming is one huge crisis which we must curtail our freedom and spend hundreds of trillions of dollars in energy suppression and third-world money-giveaways in order to stop, I am going to keep posting these three comments until you:

a) read the emails
b) convince me why I should trust a word these people say about global warming, science or any other subject whatever.

Am I being a bitch? Yes. Why? Because you're absolutely right, an impending crisis IS coming... it's just not the one you think.
Is there an accurate graph of the height of the ocean on various inhabited tropical islands over the past hundred years? The inhabitants of those islands seem to think that their homes are being swallowed by the ocean -- and not necessarily because the islands are sinking into the ocean floor.

Is there accurate, untampered photographic evidence of ice patterns in arctic and antarctic regions? Let us see these, in order and with no images missing, and compare them season to season, year to year.

Is the weather data for a particular region available and accurate? This is easily graphed in many ways.

I rather suspect that it is the illustration of data which has been played with, and not the actual data independently gathered by many separate agencies. It is disappointing that some people calling themselves scientists have decided that ideology is more important than openness, but it is not surprising, since this has happened often enough in every discipline man has devised. The science continues despite those who attempt to manipulate it.

In ten years, there will be more evidence. But it is better to start work now on prevention, and collect data as the work is done. As with Y2K, regardless of how loud people scream, if you do the work before the point of ultimate crisis arrives, then there will be much less to scream about when we reach it.
The best data I have found so far, and I am a newbie to this is here:

Google "Climate Debate Daily" which posts stuff both for and against the IPCC received wisdom.

then look at the "Key Resources" panel on the left. For example, the amount of arctic sea ice - pretty steady since 2002, in fact getting better since 2007.

I don't know what to think. Probably there is a problem but it is not nearly as likely to go critical as we are being told.

There's more stuff on my own LJ.

I tend to think that any forum that couches this as a "debate" wants to give the deniers (and the coal lobby) more credibility than they deserve, but apart from my misgivings about treating this kind of issue as a horse-race, this site looks reasonably reliable.
