Balance in Blogging

I've been blogging a lot about politics because the currents are pretty fierce right now. That's starting to get on some people's nerves. Part of my responsibility is spreading news, so I don't want to stop doing that. But I also don't want this blog to get too depressing and fricative.

So, another option is to increase the amount of positive, noncontroversial news. When you find things that are uplifting and encouraging, please consider sending them my way and I'll try to mention more of those here. I'll file them under the "good news" tag.

>>Sanitized news is not "good news" - that might just tend to get on my nerves a whole lot more than an honestly stated political view, whether I agree or want to hear about it or not.<<

I'm not looking for sanitized news. I'm looking for good news. Not everything that happens in the world is bad, although bad news attracts most of the attention. I want people to share news about fun, cool, or happy things.

>>To me, a blog is a place where you can say whatever you want, and if someone is offended or upset, well, they need to grow up or something. There are a lot of things in this world that are more upsetting than that.<<

Different blogs have different goals, and that's okay. One of mine is to create a place where my friends feel safe and comfortable. I may not always succeed at that, but it is a goal I have chosen. I know that I don't like blogs that are too depressing; I don't want mine to wind up like that. So, if someone's unhappy about the balance of content on my blog, I'd like to hear about it. I may or may not be able (or willing) to fix it, but I didn't build up this terrific audience by ignoring people.

That's interesting. I think rage, as an aspect of anger, is an emotion that tells us something is seriously wrong and we should do something to fix it.
Well, since one of my interests is the non-profit sector, I could slip you the occasional news item about a charity's successful new program, or how non-profits are surviving in these tough economic times, and so forth. :)
Worthy causes are another interest of mine. Usually my favorites are environmental nonprofits but I'm following about 8 different causes over on Change.org including women's rights, gay rights, poverty, etc.

Not long ago, I interviewed another friend over on Gaiatribe about her nonprofit work. What kind of stuff are you doing? Think you might be interested in being interviewed some time, if any of our topics overlap?

I just learned that Colorado has modified its water laws. We can now collect rain water legally. Used to be, if you didn't have groundwater rights on your property, you couldn't collect rainwater or reuse your grey water, either. Now, at least, we can collect rainwater.
I heard about the change, and I find it encouraging.
This was really interesting. Thanks for sharing. Someone I knew was once interested in becoming a nun, but it didn't come together.
I have added this community to my Watch list.

I really like what you've been posting about the healthcare issues. It's the most sensible and factual stuff I've seen.

Rather than limit that subject, why not start a blog dedicated to it? (And to related, ie political, issues.)

Really, your slant is very valuable to me, and I haven't seen anything like it elsewhere!

>>I really like what you've been posting about the healthcare issues. It's the most sensible and factual stuff I've seen.<<

I'm glad you appreciate it. I try to find resources that are more serious than bitchy, although few people are making any effort to be rational about this. I believe that complete, accurate data is necessary for making good decisions.

Because I loathe the topic. I'm only writing about it out of duty and desperation. I hope that things will get better so that I can ignore it and leave such discussions to people whose topic it properly is.
I'm a week behind, but in case you haven't seen it yet:

I'm very partial to stories about good folks coming together to do good things; this is a nice one. ozarque's blog is another place where good things frequently happen.
It's all too easy to get inundated with one item or agenda; I admire your efforts towards balance & variety in your blog.

Thanks!
