"Socialism" in context

This cartoon reveals some of the many things that are already provided by the American government, some of which are pretty effective.

This doesn't mean that putting the government in charge of any given thing is a good idea, or a bad idea -- just that it can be done and sometimes it works. This is useful to remember whether you are generally for or against government involvement, or for or against a particular program/issue/proposal. Know your context.

In fact, fire protection and police protection are fully socialized services. And while there are always problems, on the whole they work much better than the privatized versions did when they were tried.
Some things it's just in everybody's best interest for everyone to have access to when they need it.
I find the idea that nothing should be government-run as absurd as the idea that EVERYTHING should be government-run. I find hardcore Marxists and hardcore Libertarians very similar. Far more similar than either would like to admit. :-)
Moderation is usually a good idea. Extremism is usually a bad idea.

I'm still trying to figure out how the Republican Party (conservatives) and the Libertarian Party (anarchists) came to be sharing so many platform points.

I've also noticed that Congress members who condemn "socialized medicine" are all benefitting from it themselves. They just don't want the public to enjoy the same privileges they enjoy. If they really feel that it was ZOMG-EEEEVIL, they should turn down their taxpayer-sponsored health package and buy private insurance.
