Meme: Frozen Favorites

In honor of summer, I present this meme for you to use as you wish. You're welcome to reply with your answers in a comment, or on your blog, or repost this meme elsewhere.

  1. What frozen desserts do you like: ice cream, ice milk, sherbet, sorbet, granita, snow cone/shave ice, popsicle?

  2. What are three of your favorite flavors?

  3. In general, do you prefer fruit (strawberry, lime, etc.) or candy (chocolate, caramel, etc.) flavors in frozen desserts?

  4. Do you like smooth or chunky texture?

  5. You're in an ice cream parlor with dozens of flavors and different types of dessert. Do you buy an old favorite or try something you've never had before?

  6. What's the weirdest flavor you've tried -- and did you like it?

  7. If you could have any combination of plausible dessert flavors in an ice cream -- something you've never seen for sale or in a recipe -- what would you choose?

My answers...

1) I like a wide range of frozen desserts, but ice cream and ice milk are my favorites. When I was little, I liked snow cones better. I keep popsicles in the freezer for cooling down after yardwork.

2) Chocolate, wild strawberry/rose, pear/ginger.

3) I like both, but fruit probably edges out over candy for me.

4) I like both, but smooth is easier on my mouth. Big frozen hunks are not my thing.

5) I spend 10+ minutes reading all the labels and making noseprints on the cases trying to decide which flavor looks best. One of the clerks offers me a free sample and I try several different flavors before deciding on one, which is usually something new but occasionally "Let's see how good their [favorite oddball flavor] is." I generally won't buy an ordinary flavor in an exotic dessert shop, so not plain chocolate, but I might well go for dark chocolate/ginger or mixed berry.

6) Baklava. No, I only like actual baklava; I do not like baklava ice cream, even though it was totally baklava-flavored. I don't seem to like honey flavor in ice cream. But it was interesting to sample.

7) You can guess how long this lasts, like until I get my hands on the ingredients. Latest example is Doug's request for an ice cream with three different types of cherries. I've got a lot of other ice cream plans, so that one might have to wait a bit, but it's in the queue. Oh, and I was going to try the Dulce de Leche with brownie bits added.

1) What frozen desserts do you like: ice cream, ice milk, sherbet, sorbet, granita, snow cone/shave ice, popsicle?
Ice cream, sherbet, sorbet, and popsicle; in that order of preference.

2) What are three of your favorite flavors?
Chocolate, mint, almond, vanilla (with the vanilla flecks)..oh, 3.

3) In general, do you prefer fruit (strawberry, lime, etc.) or candy (chocolate, caramel, etc.) flavors in frozen desserts?
Depends entirely on my mood at the time. I'm a huge fan of gooey chocolate but then I also adore lime and cherry and strawberry.

4) Do you like smooth or chunky texture?
Again, I'm eclectic in my choices but I tend to go for texture.

5) You're in an ice cream parlor with dozens of flavors and different types of dessert. Do you buy an old favorite or try something you've never had before?
I love to spend time looking and tasting but often I end up going for an old favorite, like mint-chocolate chip or rocky road.

6) What's the weirdest flavor you've tried -- and did you like it?
I made a lime, coconut, pecan blend once that was DIVINE. That's about as weird as I get. OH, your Dulce de Leche sounds wonderful!
# If you could have any combination of plausible dessert flavors in an ice cream -- something you've never seen for sale or in a recipe -- what would you choose?
I would like to come to your house for ice cream.
... if you're ever in central Illinois, let us know. We're often available for getting together with friends. There is usually some flavor of ice cream in the freezer, and I can always make a batch if needed.
1) What frozen desserts do you like: ice cream, ice milk, sherbet, sorbet, granita, snow cone/shave ice, popsicle?
Ice cream, sherbet, sorbet. Although these days I have to be careful about the desserts I choose - I found out recently that I'm lactose-intolerant!

2) What are three of your favorite flavors?
Chocolate, caramel, black cherry.

3) In general, do you prefer fruit (strawberry, lime, etc.) or candy (chocolate, caramel, etc.) flavors in frozen desserts?
Candy flavors.

4) Do you like smooth or chunky texture?
Both!

5) You're in an ice cream parlor with dozens of flavors and different types of dessert. Do you buy an old favorite or try something you've never had before?
In this type of situation, I tend to go for flavors that incorporate one of my favorites but also add something unexpected.

6) What's the weirdest flavor you've tried -- and did you like it?
Carrot cake ice cream, with shreds of real carrot mixed in! And I loved it. :-9

7) If you could have any combination of plausible dessert flavors in an ice cream -- something you've never seen for sale or in a recipe -- what would you choose?
This may have been produced already, but I'd try a s'mores ice cream (flavors of chocolate, graham cracker, and toasted marshmallow, yum)!
Strawberry Ricecream
http://ysabetwordsmith.livejournal.com/381806.html

There are various dairy substitutes that work in a frozen dessert machine.

Granita can actually be made with a fork, in a baking pan:

I must have glanced over your recipe for Strawberry Ricecream when you posted it in October because I remember the recipe's name, although not much else. Looking back at it now, however, I may try out your popsicle idea. There are several good organics grocers in my area, so I'm sure I could find the rice milk.

Thanks! :)
I'd love to hear how it turns out for you, if you try this.
Have you tried tea ice creams? The most common is green tea, but ice creams and sorbets can be flavored with almost any sort of tea.

I'd like to make a Veddy British Tea ice cream some time, creamy and sweet with strong Darjeeling, and just a touch of lemon.
I like green tea ice cream, and will probably make a batch eventually. Meanwhile, I used Earl Grey tea in the White Peach Ice Cream to bring out the bitter, furry, and citrus notes.
