I was quite pleased by this proposal from a Republican, and disgusted that the Democrats didn't support it:

Senator Tom Coburn is a physician who until recently still went home to Oklahoma to deliver babies. He believes Congress should weigh the dangers of a nationalized health system much more seriously than it has. In the tradition of someone using a 2x4 to win the attention of a mule, yesterday he successfully pressed the Senate Health Committee to approve his idea of requiring Members of Congress themselves to enroll in whatever "public plan" is passed to compete with private insurance companies.

I have long thought that if politicians had to face the same terrible insurance challenges as ordinary people, we might have a working health care system by now. I'm sure they'll kill this provision, but while it lasts, maybe it will get them thinking in a positive direction.

XD That is an excellent idea! They should totally do that!
From a different source than the Conservative Wall Street Journal: Many of the amendments were adopted, including several aimed at stemming health-care and Medicare fraud, and one sponsored by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., that would require members of Congress to enroll in the new public plan. (italics mine)

Coburn pretty much seemed to be firing off amendments scattershot

Coburn also recently proposed amendments to a bill to protect state laws limiting abortions and abortion funding from being nullified by federal law under the health care bill and a second that would protect the conscience rights of health care workers.

Another of Coburn's amendments would have struck all the health system quality improvements from the bill.

And, of course, you can read how Coburn treated Sonia Sotomayor during her hearings over the past few days.
I don't actually think he's a good politician. I just believe in praising people when they do something right, and I think we'd have better care if politicians didn't have golden parachutes.
Okay, but three of the Democrats on the committee (Kennedy, Dodd, Mikulski) did support Coburn's amendment, which is why it made it into the bill (and one Republican voted against it).
It really doesn't matter what insurance plan they pass because those of us who cannot afford even the most minimum set-up they come up with will still be screwed as far as health care is concerned. I just keep hoping my health does not get any worse. Right now the blood work for the CHF is more than we can handle.
That's a key reason why I prefer health care reform to insurance reform. With the politicians insisting they have to keep feeding the insurance monster, that limits the potential benefits to clients needing health care. But there are claims that insurance would be subsidized for those who couldn't afford the fees; I'll believe that if I see it in action, but it would be some improvement.
And I am certain health care reform will not happen in this country simply because the standard response to anyone who has an illness they cannot afford is to denigrate the person for daring to inconvenience those who have the means to afford their own care.

I am just as frustrated in writing to my congresscritters because when I have written about some of my concerns on other issues, including my stance, I received replies with the same rhetoric they promote to those who completely agree with them.

Now, when I write my congresscritters the first paragraph contains the phrase "I know that you aren't going to even read this but I am putting it out for my own peace of mind." Sure enough, standard form response is what I receive if I do get a response.

Yes, I am seriously fed up with this "every man for himself" nonsense. That's not a society; it's anarchy.

That varies depending on who you write to. Some only seem to have one form letter. Others have a batch of forms, sometimes even two per issue -- one for people who agree, one for people who disagree. Probably all of them have staff to count the premise of the messages, so they'll have an idea what their constituents want and how to lie to make it seem like they're delivering that.

It's the usual double standard whereby rich people dupe poor people into giving up their resources. It frustrates me too. Also the military enjoys socialized medicine through the VA system. (I wouldn't blame anyone for not wanting to duplicate that, though; it's a nightmare of inefficiency and bad care.) America has a public education system, which everyone agrees is a good and necessary thing; and that's also falling apart because nobody wants to pay for it or otherwise take care of it.

I think people mostly want the goodies without having to do anything in exchange. It's irresponsible. It's also an example of people wanting whatever they want and not caring who else gets hurt in the process. These destructive memes are becoming so widespread that society is seriously starting to come unglued in large pieces instead of slowly crumbling.
And we have socialized fire departments, police departments, libraries, roads, courts, and parks -- "socialized" just means "public." But socialized medicine? It's unAmerican!
I just got another incorrect statement from the insurance hellhole calling itself Cigna.

I will support anything that makes Cigna goes away. I realize a government plan might suck, but you know, so does the private insurance I have now!
I totally sympathize. I have seen many people struggle with insurance harassment. I think that, in theory, insurance has potential to be very useful; but in practice it is an abusive mess.
