Torn World Seeks Contributors

I'm pleased to announce that one of my long-term projects is now accessible: Torn World is a shared-world fantasy and it has just opened for contributors. ellenmillion has written a post over on crowdfunding explains a little about the project and how you can get involved. There are opportunities for people to contribute art, writing, and other creative support. There are also various options for cyberfunded creativity/crowdfunding, so you can earn money (and perks) or give those things to people whose work you love.

So far, I've done a lot of behind-the-scenes work with ellenmillion on website beta-testing, story editing, and general idea-bouncing. This is her world at heart, and it's lovely of her to share it with us. I'm also part of the team developing the Torn Tongue language family, along with padparadscha and other folks. I've written a couple of poems that should appear onsite eventually. (Be patient, there is still a ton of stuff to upload, so it will roll out in phases.) Please drop by and take a look! The big publicity push is scheduled for January 1, 2010, when Torn World will be opened to the general public. Right now we're mainly looking for more writers, artists, and people who'd like to help with the administrative work.

Sounds cool, I'll have to check it out. I love shared worlds. It's fun bouncing ideas off other writers to create something special.
That would be great. Torn World is a fun shared world project.
... missed the second "d" in my name there.

I have to admit I've stalled on working on the language mostly because I'm a little self-conscious about my contributions, but I finally put up a post in the language area. Let me know what I need to change.

I'm also going through and trying to make a list of the words we'll want in a glossary for general use--the stuff that is unique to Torn World.
I have fixed the name. Sorry about that.

I'll check the language post you made, if I can log in. There was a problem with my password; ellenmillion says she fixed it so I need to test that tonight.

Since nobody picked up the early invitations to generate words, I started doing the Basic English words in batches. I've got a huge list now, but it's not quite done -- and at this point, I don't want to submit it part-done because there are a bunch of connections between words and sometimes I have to change stuff. I did, however, hand in the collated and organized rules of the language and previously approved vocabulary based on the forum discussions.

I haven't gotten to all the Torn World uniquities yet, but I have lists for some, and a few ways to derive certain words from basic words. *ponder* If yours and mine turn out different, we could:
1) compare the words and pick one or the other.
2) use both, but refine definitions (light dry snow vs. heavy wet snow).
3) use both, but sort them into different languages as divergent vocabulary, which we need to do for Ancient anyway.
4) use both as straight synonyms (small, little).
5) any combination of those, for different words.

I don't want you to stop working on the language. Do you have any pieces you could show me that I might be able to work with? I could show you what I have, bearing in mind that the vocabulary parts are not fully set yet.
I have seen your comments over there. I think I was working off the wordlist you made. I like the idea of synonyms and different meanings--I've always been a fan of the way word connotations change over time.

As for deferring to you, it's mostly because you seem to be able to keep track of what's been agreed upon far better than I can, so I check back with you to make sure I'm still up-to-date. Otherwise I am liable to wind up working at cross-purposes, or use a rule we'd discarded or something.

Howzabout we divide up whatever you have left to do on your list, and we'll both work out what sorts of unique words and phrases we think might come in handy? And I'll continue this over in the proper forum, but I figured I'd reply here this time. ;)

Sorry about that. I really should've announced what I was working on.

Fair enough. You'll be happy to hear that I turned in the collated materials from all those forum discussions: an alphabetical list of approved vocabulary words, the main Wiki file for the language, and a supplemental Wiki file with detailed sections on the parts of speech. It's a lot easier working from those!

The original list of basic words is almost done, but there are some other things I haven't started matching Torn Tongue words to yet. So I posted my lists of uniquities, and I posted an idea for what to do with Ellen's earlier observation about repurposed words from Ancient to Southern (or more rarely, Northern). Once you and Ellen have added any terms you want to contribute, those will be available for development. I figure we can parcel them out by sections to whomever wants to work on them. I'm inclined to give you first pick of those, since I've already done a big chunk of vocabulary.

Also, I finished comparing the list you posted to mine. My suggestions are posted in the forum, and I think we got some useful variations out of this.
