The Crowdsource Tarot

beetiger and sythyry have collaborated with friends to create The Crowdsource Tarot. The main site features background information on the project, text descriptions and interpretations for the cards, a divination tool, a donation button, and an invitation for artists to illustrate the cards. Looks like fun to me, and the concepts are well assembled.

Thanks for the link! I tried out the "get a reading" feature -- it really gave me a good answer.
Oh, how very, very cool. I WANT to be involved, I do!

Funny thing is that when I first started down this path, a mentor suggested that it might be a task of mine to design and do the artwork for a new Tarot deck. Problem was, I didn't know diddly squat about Tarot so I put it off indefinitely.

Now here comes this very nifty idea with such lovely concepts and images behind it. This rings to me, clearly and loudly.

Of all the things I am that you know of, one of the things I doubt you do is that I was an Art Major and mostly use my art in fabric manipulation.

Well, ok...before this gets too long, I should probably carry it to email with whomever.

Goodness, I did not expect to come across a major bit like this, today of all days.
I'm happy that I could make this connection. I hope it works out for you.

I think you had mentioned working with fabric, but I didn't know about the Art Major part; that's cool. I enjoy sewing myself.
I started sewing when I was 3 and kept at it; couldn't decide whether to major in Art, Music or Theatre and art won. Renaissance Festivals became where I could use all three. It was out of faire that I started my sewing business.

So I've been a professional seamstress for the last 25 years, make all my own costumes and those for the band, as well as made a living producing wedding gown and everything else for about 18 years.

Yeah, art is my life...
I think I was about 2 when my mother and grandmother started having me hold down patterns on the table and stuff like that. I took up actual sewing a few years later, and have intermittently practiced it since. Local friends often bring me stuff to mend, and I've had a few people pay me to make things for them. But mostly it's a hobby for me.

Your accomplishments sound impressive!
Well, I've re-invented myself so many times, it isn't funny but at least I can say that I've never been bored.

Really, the idea of this artwork has me excited as I haven't been by anything in a long time. *grin* Leave it to me to get really pumped up by something that won't bring in any income!
Hmm ... I know that the Crowdsource Tarot is a cyberfunded project. There's a donation button on the site. So while it probably isn't a paying market for artwork up front, it might have money attached to the art in other ways. Frex, if you made something relating to the deck and posted a picture of it on the site, fans of the deck might be interested in buying the original from you. I don't know whether or not the authors have any revenue-sharing plans in mind for artists who contribute (on the premise that art might attract more donations). It's worth exploring if money is a key concern for you. On the other hoof, if you're just glad for the inspiration, go with that.
Good thinking...I've been doing way too much gratis work because it needed doing. Even though my hubby provides everything, it's critical for my sense of independence to become financially independent at least to some degree.

The next web-site I'll be working on, after the FiddlyBags one is my Ritual-Wear site, with my designs not only garb for rituals and other wearable art but also spiritually-oriented artwork to decorate altars and shrines. This might dove-tail with that beautifully....and that web-site is being designed by a friend in another band who is doing the work in trade for pirate garb.

I love trade when it benefits everyone.

One of the most important things in self-employment is simply thinking of your work as marketable, as potentially profitable. My career is wordsmithing, but I've taken money or barter for all manner of different tidbits over the years.

Let me know when you get the Ritual-Wear site ready for traffic. I can send people your way; I've got a lot of Pagan or otherwise magical readers. I do product reviews over on Hypatia's Hoard of Reviews, as well as book reviews, if you have anything small enough to turn loose as a review copy, like hats, Tarot bags, stoles, etc. The Yemaya flag we used in our Litha ritual was actually a review copy -- part of a set -- that came from Karuna Arts.
You are awesome!

Soon as White Hart Renfaire is over (2nd weekend of July) I'll be working on prototypes and getting the web-site up and going soon as I can. The FiddlyBags one just hasn't taken off at all but then, the design sucked and is being renovated by an LJ friend of mine in California.

I'll most definitely let you know; that was actually the original one that I wanted to do to take my custom sewing online and mail order but then the band started and the fiddle, whistle and bodhran bags needed to be made.

Life is what happens when you're making other plans! I'd be more than happy to send you review items and get your feedback and other ideas from it.

You're awesome!

(BTW, I heard back from her already and signed up to do three cards: Spendor, Tangles and Crow)
*bow, flourish*

That sounds good.

Sometimes it takes a while to find the right niche and/or presentation.

*laugh*

Yeah, that's what I said when someone asked me to take up magazine editing, something I had never intended. But it was great while it lasted, and I'd jump at another job like that.

>>I'd be more than happy to send you review items and get your feedback and other ideas from it.<<

Okay, great. I can do feedback well.

>>BTW, I heard back from her already and signed up to do three cards: Splendor, Tangles and Crow.<<

How exciting! Splendor has the peacock in it, if I remember right ... I'd be looking for shot silk or maybe holographic fabric, for that.

Have you tried out the divination page yet? It gives interesting answers.

Also, I have written a review of The Crowdsource Tarot and it's slated to appear on the Hoard blog tomorrow.
Yes, I did and got a smart-ass'd answer! Exactly what I deserved, I'm afraid.

I chose Splendor because of the peacock; that's my personal standard and yes, various colors of iridescent thai silk is exactly what I had in mind.
This is so awesome! I really love the idea!
