You know it's mine when...

haikujaguar turned me onto this meme:

I see that there's a meme going round now that starts: "You know you're reading my stories/my work/one of my books when..." followed by a list of attributes the author thinks crop up in his or her own work often enough to characterize it.


Only instead of describing her own work, she's asking other people to do it for her. That version is much more interesting to me than describing it myself, so I'd like you folks to fill in the blank for me. (I know I've got some of my first-readers on here who can do it for the fiction; the rest can use poetry or nonfiction if that's what you've read enough of mine to characterize.) This will be fun...

I am thinking about this still, because I'm running very very slow on cycles. But the first thing that came to mind (and I've spent half a day trying to figure out how to phrase it) is: each piece has its own palette. If there's something I admire most about your work, it's how the work's needs dictate your use of language and imagery/sensory imagery.

I think you're right. One of the things I enjoy about writing is that I can do different things depending on my mood at the time ... the way you'd choose different colors of paint to put on your palette. *G* I actually have a series of science fiction poems each of which features a different color, like "Golden Opportunities" in the latest issue of Star*Line for yellow. My Penumbra fiction reminds me of charcoal or chiaroscuro.

And to think I had writing teachers who tried to herd me into a single field and style. *snort*
