Character notes for "A Better Place for Everyone"

These are the character notes for "A Better Place for Everyone."

La'Tavia Linn -- She has light brown skin, black eyes, and shoulder-length black hair with a loose coily nap. She is petite with small breasts but wide hips. Her heritage includes African-American and Asian. She speaks English. She is 25 years old in 2016.
La'Tavia earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration: Marketing and a minor in African-American Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. There she joined the Diversity Enhancement Team, Games Guild, Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International UNL Student Chapter, Outdoor Adventure Club, Undergraduate Women in Business, and UNL Disability Club.
Partway through college, La'Tavia developed fibromyalgia, which sometimes interfered with her classwork. She has the grit to handle hardships, though. She joined the UNL Disability Club to find support. Most of her teachers were accommodating, though some proved problematic. She took an extra year to graduate, but still managed to complete the programs.
After graduating, La'Tavia moved to Omaha, where she worked on several different ad campaigns before she landed a marketing job at Blues Moon and moved into the apartment next to it. She is one of Boss Brown's hires. Sometimes she works with Shiv, who can make art for her marketing projects.
La'Tavia plays keyboard for both hip-hop and jazz. An advantage of synthetic music is that it can be saved and played back at need from the same instrument. This is convenient when her body malfunctions. La'Tavia favors comfortable women's wear in soft shades of ivory, khaki, and tan accented with pastels like sage and peach. Her accessories are a mix of soft colors. She likes textures such as cableknit for self-comfort and sweaters or sweater dresses for warmth.
Qualities: Good (+2) African-American Studies, Good (+2) Grit, Good (+2) Keyboard Player, Good (+2) Marketing, Good (+2) Visual-Spatial Intelligence
Poor (-2) Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic illness characterized by flulike pain, fatigue, tender points, and other complaints.  It has higher prevalence among black women and often coincides with other problems such as lupus. La'Tavia's most common symptoms include wandering pain, stiff muscles, poor sleep, fatigue, and menstrual pain. Fibromyalgia can have many triggers that activate or worsen problems, such as weather or stress. It often flares in response to women's monthly cycles. Conventional medications such as painkillers often fail to help. A calm, comfortable environment, good ergonomic tools, and herbal treatments may help make it more bearable.

Keyboard / synthesizer is a popular instrument both in hip hop and in jazz (among other genres).  Advantages for people with disabilities are that you can use software to compensate for some issues, and you can easily record tracks or whole songs to play back when you feel too crummy to perform live.

La'Tavia wrote her undergraduate thesis on "The Representation of African-American People with Superpowers." It included a statistical analysis of which superpowers appeared more often in African-American vs. White populations, and then whether those powers were more often classified as "superhero" or "supervillain" type, and finally the proportion of people classified as "superheroes" or "supervillains" in each group. Survival-related superpowers such as Iron Stomach, Regeneration, Super-Immunity, and Toughness appeared more often in the African-American group. Psionic Powers of all kinds and Super-Intellect appeared more often in the White group, but results suggested that African-American Super-Intellects were undercounted. Unsurprisingly, the same ability was more likely to be classified as "supervillain" in relation to black people than to white people.

Clubs

Diversity Enhancement Team

Games Guild

Outdoor Adventures is a part of Campus Recreation so we do not operate like a typical club (and therefore do not have members). If you are interested in the outdoors you can come check us out at the Outdoor Adventure Center or learn more/sign up for programs at https://crec.unl.edu/outdoor.
We take people out on adventure trips and have a climbing wall, bike shop, challenge course and equipment rental services. We would love to have you on our trips and in our space!

Undergraduate Women in Business
To promote a higher business education and training for undergraduates, to foster high ideals for people in business careers, to encourage fraternity and provide a place for students to share their ideas and insights into the world of business.
