Poem: "Carving Memories"
This poem was written outside the regular prompt calls. It was inspired by the "Craft Project" square in my 2-1-22 card for the Valentines Bingo fest. This poem has been sponsored by a pool with Dreamwidth user Fuzzyred. It belongs to the series Arts and Crafts America.
"Carving Memories"
[Summer-Fall 2017]
The wildfire season had
gone from five months
to over seven months.
Tane Garwood had
watched it grow, and he
used permaculture methods
to maintain moisture levels
throughout his forest farm.
He dug contour swales
and spread plenty of mulch.
He had a return program for
Christmas trees, which he used
to make long hugelkultur pits.
But it wasn't enough.
The summer of 2017
brought a bad fire season.
Wildfires swept through the area
and burned most of Tane's farm.
Heartbroken, he returned
to college and studied
wilderness firefighting.
While there, he went back
to a favorite student activity,
the Maker's Club. There
he discovered chip carving.
He started with practice boards
of triangular or square designs
and an assortment of rosettes.
He made water wheels that
rotated in different directions.
He located a pattern for
a hot air balloon ornament
and made them as magnets.
Then Tane found a pattern
for an evergreen tree.
That gave him an idea.
He made dozens of them,
colored them in shades of
green with thick paint, and
sold them to help finance
replanting trees on his farm.
Chip carving was something
that Tane could do any time
he wasn't actually working.
He built up a small forest of
tiny evergreens in his home that
reminded him of what he'd had
and would someday have again.
Until then, Tane spent his evenings
sitting on the porch, carving memories.

Tane Garwood -- He has fair skin, brown eyes, and short brown hair. He is tall and strong. His heritage is American. He speaks English and Spanish. He is 38 years old in 2017.
Tane earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Landscape Management: Arboriculture with a Certificate in Organic Farming at Clackamas Community College in Wilsonville, Oregon. He belonged to the Clackamas Rag, Horticulture Club, The Maker's Club, Oregon Authors Book Club, and Wilderness Club. After graduating, Tane bought land near Cherryville, Oregon. There he started a farm raising Christmas trees and other forest products using organic and sustainable methods. In summer of 2017, a wildfire swept through the area, burning down his farm and everything around it. Devastated by the loss, Tane returned to college for a Wildland Firefighter Certificate. He also reconnected with the Maker's Club among others, and there he learned about chip carving. He made and sold chip-carved Christmas tree ornaments to raise money for planting new trees on his farm.

Experiential learning of organic farming techniques, while working on the Student Farm. Students learn ecological and sustainable practices, principles, and management strategies. This course includes the seasonal activities of a working, small scale Organic Farm: seed sowing, planting, cultivation, irrigation, harvest, packing, selling at farmers market and to restaurants. An important aspect of this course is participating in the on-campus, weekly farmers market. All tasks are hands-on and guided by the instructor. This format has been selected to create a hands-on experience for each student in seasonal crop production and marketing.

The field of wildland firefighting and forestry is one of the most demanding, yet rewarding, lines of work. If you love the outdoors, yearn for adventure and travel, and enjoying working as part of a team, then wildland fire could be for you.
Clackamas Community College Fire Science program provides education and training that can lead to seasonal or permanent employment with state, federal and private contract firefighting or within the timber industry.
There are many career tracks in the field of wildland firefighting and forestry. It's exciting work that requires fundamental survival, safety and firefighting skills.
CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR FIREFIGHTERS
Separate from its degrees and academic certificates, Clackamas Community College also offers re-certification trainings and professional development opportunities for wildland firefighters, forestry workers, public land managers and natural resource field technicians.
Our language skills assessments, refresher courses and work capacity tests will boost your skills and allow you to advance in your profession.
LANGUAGE SKILLS ASSESSMENT
Prompt and efficient communication between contractor crew personnel and incident personnel is mandatory for safe and effective performance on the fire line. To ensure language proficiency, the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) requires all crew and squad leaders to pass the Language Skills Assessment.
The assessment is in two parts. The first is an oral assessment where the firefighter is asked questions verbally and must answer in either English or Spanish as requested. The second part is a written exam. The firefighter is given an Incident Action Plan (IAP) and must extract the answers to the questions from the plan. CCC offers several LSAs each spring and early summer.
WILDLAND REFRESHER TRAINING (RT-130)
Wildland fire refresher training (RT 130) informs wildland firefighters of current issues and the upcoming fire season. This training is required annually by all federal, state and contract firefighters.
Training is provided to recognize and mitigate risk, maintain safe and effective firefighting practices, and reduce accidents and near misses. Clackamas Community College offers a five-hour refresher course each season. The college can arrange courses geared toward agency-specific requirements, such as fireline EMTs.
WORK CAPACITY (PACK) TEST
The Work Capacity (Pack) Test is a yearly requirement for all fireline personnel. We offer the test at all three levels: arduous, moderate and light. As a recognized Public Training Provider, our pack tests are overseen by the Oregon Department of Forestry.
After a safety briefing, participants will carry a weighted vest around the college track, completing 3 miles in 45 minutes (arduous).

Clackamas Community College Fire Science program provides education and training that can lead to seasonal or permanent employment with state, federal and private contract firefighting or within the timber industry.
There are many career tracks in the field of wildland firefighting and forestry. It's exciting work that requires fundamental survival, safety and firefighting skills.
CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR FIREFIGHTERS
Separate from its degrees and academic certificates, Clackamas Community College also offers re-certification trainings and professional development opportunities for wildland firefighters, forestry workers, public land managers and natural resource field technicians.
Our language skills assessments, refresher courses and work capacity tests will boost your skills and allow you to advance in your profession.
LANGUAGE SKILLS ASSESSMENT
Prompt and efficient communication between contractor crew personnel and incident personnel is mandatory for safe and effective performance on the fire line. To ensure language proficiency, the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) requires all crew and squad leaders to pass the Language Skills Assessment.
The assessment is in two parts. The first is an oral assessment where the firefighter is asked questions verbally and must answer in either English or Spanish as requested. The second part is a written exam. The firefighter is given an Incident Action Plan (IAP) and must extract the answers to the questions from the plan. CCC offers several LSAs each spring and early summer.
WILDLAND REFRESHER TRAINING (RT-130)
Wildland fire refresher training (RT 130) informs wildland firefighters of current issues and the upcoming fire season. This training is required annually by all federal, state and contract firefighters.
Training is provided to recognize and mitigate risk, maintain safe and effective firefighting practices, and reduce accidents and near misses. Clackamas Community College offers a five-hour refresher course each season. The college can arrange courses geared toward agency-specific requirements, such as fireline EMTs.
WORK CAPACITY (PACK) TEST
The Work Capacity (Pack) Test is a yearly requirement for all fireline personnel. We offer the test at all three levels: arduous, moderate and light. As a recognized Public Training Provider, our pack tests are overseen by the Oregon Department of Forestry.
After a safety briefing, participants will carry a weighted vest around the college track, completing 3 miles in 45 minutes (arduous).
