The parking lot near the south end of the causeway has a butterfly habitat.

This is the sign for the butterfly habitat.

Several Canada geese are grazing just above the lake.

I got a better picture of this goose in a different patch of grass.

This is the sign near the south end of the causeway.

Looking east from the causeway, the shore is forested.

I spotted this interesting bit of stumpery in the water.

These are American coots. Several types of waterfowl that are unrelated to ducks nevertheless look like ducks while swimming. Their feet are different though. Coots are dark gray-brown to black birds with a white beak.

This cluster of trees conceals a great blue heron. Another hiker told us about it, but we couldn't spot it until it moved. Very few creatures are capable of beating me at camouflage.

From here, we could look out and see the heron. It spent a lot of time hiding in the trees. There were actually at least two others on the lake, but not where I could get pictures of them.

This is one of the best pictures I got of the heron.

Here is another view looking east as we walked back.

The view to the west shows the sky starting to cloud over. At the bottom of the picture you can see part of another trail that goes around the edge of the lake.
