Yard Pictures: The Forest Garden

Today I took some pictures of my yard, which is just starting to wake up.  This set covers the forest garden and herb gardens. See the South Lot, the West Edge, the Savanna, the Prairie Garden, and the House Yard sets.

The forest garden stands just outside the kitchen window, at the edge of the patio.  It includes the metal stand feeder, hopper feeder, thistle sock, and an ear of corn.  This space is shady and damp enough to support a variety of woodland wildflowers. That little white bar hanging on the middle tree is the hygrometer from our new home weather station.

The celandine poppy is just beginning to sprout.

Two bluebells are well sprouted.

The narrow shoots just to the right of the hose are hostas.  I got these in a plant swap and they are enthusiastic growers.  Smaller cup-shaped leaves are violets.

Drainage from the basement serves as a seasonal stream.  It sometimes has water in winter, usually runs flush for quite a while in spring, dries up in summer, and sometimes has a smaller autumn flow.  When it's dry, I can pour water into the rock-shaped bowl.  Birds love to drink and splash here.  The milk jug marks a linden sapling.

Blue grape hyacinths are sprouting along the eastern edge of the forest garden.

Below are the two herb gardens.  They have been raked and weeded once, but not all the way tidied up yet, and I haven't planted anything new this year.

The cistern garden is roughly square, inset in the patio near the forest garden.  Mostly what it has right now are garlic chives and regular chives.

The strip garden fills a notch in the patio just beyond the cistern garden.  It has lemon balm, tansy, and bergamot sprouting so far.
