Poem: "Emphatic Questions"
This poem came out of the January 4, 2022 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from
heartsinger. It also fills the "Discovery" square in my 12-23-21 card for the Story Sparks Fest. This poem has been sponsored by
janetmiles.
"Emphatic Questions"
Language is
infinitely malleable,
discovering many ways
to say the same things.
Emphatic question words
take the place of "the fuck"
when you don't want
to be quite that crude.
"Whatst is going on here?"
"Whomst thought that was
ever going to be a good idea?"
"Whymst did you do that?"
"Whenst did it start --
and wheremst is
the fire extinguisher?"
Of course, if one isn't
enough, you can always
put them together:
"Howmst the fuck
is this my life?"
Emphatic questions
are just the words
that we need for
this day and age.
Take them, use them,
and build yourself
strange new pyramids
in the newspapers.
