Poem: "Il difficile è scoprirle"

Canna-Rosa plopped her bag
on her bed and then sat beside it.
"Have you decided which classes
you want to take next?" she asked,
looking at her roommate Lavanda.
"I'm doing Yoga, Dinner for Twenty,
and Advanced Oral Sex Techniques."
The comares didn't exactly have
a separate school, but many of
their skills were taught in classes
that anyone was free to join, and
some were just for the comares.
Lavanda shook back her hair
in cascades of pale purple.
"I'm taking Dinner for Twenty,
Advanced Shibari: Suspensions,
and Intimacy Mapping for Contracts,"
said Lavanda. "They all sound fun."
Canna-Rosa frowned. "We've been
taking classes together all year, and
you're still not picking any sex topics?
It'd be a shame for you to fall behind."
"I'm not really into that," Lavanda said.
"All ... right," Canna-Rosa said slowly.
"That's different. I mean, we're comares.
Isn't that part of the job description?"
"Not for everyone," said Lavanda.
"Demanding sex inside or outside of
a contract is expressly forbidden."
"But most people have sex anyway,"
said Canna-Rosa. "They just want to."
"I don't," said Lavanda. "I'm not
the only one who feels that way."
"But you're kinky as a mountain road,"
Canna-Rosa said. "That's a kind of sex."
Lavanda shook her head. "Not everyone
who enjoys kink necessarily mixes it
with sex. It's good by itself too."
"Huh. I didn't know that. All of
my kinky classes have been sexy,"
said Canna-Rosa. "I love the practicals."
"I love my practicals too," said Lavanda.
"I just don't need to take off my panties."
"Because it's all in your head, instead
of down there?" Canna-Rosa said.
"No, no," said Lavanda. "It can get
just as physical for me -- the panting,
the delicious shivers, the sounds.
It simply isn't a carnal thing."
"I'm still trying to figure out
how you can drop into subspace
without the arousal," said Canna-Rosa.
"I mean, isn't the pain more distracting?"
"I'm not really into that either," said Lavanda.
"I can switch, but I top more than I bottom. I
love taking care of my partner, and bondage
lets me make them perfectly helpless.
For me, that's a big part of the rush."
"Ohh, okay," said Canna-Rosa.
"I guess I do a lot more with
channeling pain than you do."
"I think you do more with that than
most people," said Lavanda. "It's
good that you play to your strengths."
Well, it was right there in their names, after all.
"I have to wonder ... why become a comare,
when you're not into sex?" said Canna-Rosa.
"I was actually studying cosmetic chemistry
when this happened." Lavanda swept
a hand through her purple hair. "It
made me think that I could be doing
something more with my superpowers."
"So you became a comare instead
of a supervillain or a superhera?"
Canna-Rosa said with a laugh.
"I have no interest in committing or
stopping crimes," said Lavanda. "I
like taking care of people, and I like
looking beautiful, and my abilities
lend themselves well to those."
"Why not just get married?"
Canna-Rosa wondered.
"Because I want stability,
without the expectations that
marriage carries," said Lavanda.
"A comare contract is clear about
what each person's duties are,
and they can run long or short
depending on what people want."
"Which is basically why bosses
so often choose a comare instead of
or in addition to spouse," said Canna-Rosa.
"They want the security and clarity that
comes with that kind of contract."
"Exactly," said Lavanda. "It's a job,
and it's a good job. It has a huge range
of professional skills, and I'm good at --
or at least training for -- some of the ones
that are valued but less common than sex,
like massage and advanced bondage."
Lavanda was particularly good at
the decorative rope bondage and
things involving fine Italian leather.
"I suppose a lot of us get into this
for similar reasons," said Canna-Rosa.
"Finding a husband who enjoys flogging

"Exactly. Besides, some bosses

Lavanda pointed out. "They might

"Are they the same, or are they different?"

necessarily in full view," said Lavanda.
"Some people are stuffy, and others
are just private. Not all Families are
as tolerant as us, which is why we get
so many people coming in from elsewhere."
"Like all the butches," said Canna-Rosa.
"Okay, that makes more sense now."
"I'm glad I could clarify it," said Lavanda.
