Location notes for "In Untried Emergencies"

These are the location notes for "In Untried Emergencies."

Given the mayhem at hand, some of this content may be disturbing.

I will do my best to keep this stuff organized, but I have a mountain of notes for this incident. I'll try to focus first on an overview and the places mentioned in this poem. Later I'll post more stuff if I have time.

If you want to use GoogleMaps to explore the area, search for Gene Leahy Mall and then click the Street View layer. Be aware that not everything looks the same; L-Omaha and T-Omaha are similar, not identical. But you can tell directions and at least some of the major locations.

The cape fight started in the vicinity of the Gene Leahy Mall in downtown Omaha. As described in the previous poem "At Certain Crucial Moments," Boss White and Buttons were in front of the Downtown Coffee Company, looking across the width of Farnam Street at the Gene Leahy Mall as they waited for Shiv. The Mall lies between Douglas Street (north) and Farnam Street (south), South 14th Street (west) and South 10th Street (east).

The giant slides are near Burlington Capital Real Estate, which is at the corner of Farnam Street and South 10th Street.

Shiv was coming down South 10th Street, planning to get off at the 10th & Dodge SE bus stop, listed on Google Maps as (Kelly Green) 16 -- bus stops appear as little blue squares. From there it's one block south to Douglas Street and another block to Farnam Street. With Douglas completely jammed and traffic backing up more, the bus instead halts at its 10th & Capitol Avenue NW stop, then breaks route to turn along Capitol in hopes of escaping the chaos. Shiv could get to Douglas, but not much farther, because of damage to the Greenhouse Apartments building. He actually stops short of that, just beyond the Advanced Surgery Center at 111 S. 10th Street, in the parklet which has a little brick shelter with a picnic table.

Nebraska Omaha Gene Leahy Mall Looking Toward Burlington Capital Real Estate
The east end of the park points toward Burlington Capital Real Estate, which is the shorter white building near the top of the picture; and beyond that the Greenhouse Apartments, the tall red building and Conagra Lake in Heartland of America Park. About half of the top three stories are missing on the left / north side, cut at a concave angle. The street to the right of the park is Farnam, to the left is Douglas, and at the top is South 10th Street.
Across Farnam the buildings include a cluster of businesses with the historic Poppleton Block. The Downtown Coffee Company is between Matsu Sushi and Urbane Salon & Day Spa, near the corner of Farnam and South 10th Street. The roofs of these buildings are damaged, with civilian casualties on street. The large midrise includes Orangetheory Fitness, also with a partially damaged roof. The tall mirrored building is the Landmark Building, part of which is a hotel called the Farnam, Autograph Collection. About half of the top four floors are missing, cut somewhat flatter.
Passing through the park is South 13th Street, and toward the bottom is South 14th Street, beyond which lies the W. Dale Clark Main Library that is unscathed in the fight. The red building between those two streets is the State of Nebraska Office Building, cut vertically in half on the diagonal from the Farnam/S13 corner to the Harney/S14 corner, likely the true target of the rampage.

The Greenhouse Apartments building stands at the S 10th Street end of the Gene Leahy Mall, facing Farnam Street. The large plaza and pond face South 10th Street and the rectangular stairstep ponds face Douglas Street, so this is the corner that gets cut off.

The Greenhouse Apartments building is 7 large windows wide per side, so figure 14 apartments per floor on most floors, and 9 floors of windows of which the lowest is the amenity floor, so 8 residential floors. In T-America, the top two floors each have six 3-bedroom penthouses plus some premium amenities. Based on floor plans, many apartments have only one window, although the larger ones have more. With half of the top three floors sliced away, that's six 3-bedroom apartments and seven smaller ones, for a total of 13 units affected. Assume an average of 3 people per 2-bedroom apartment (21) and 4 people per 3-bedroom apartment (24) for a total of 45 residents. Most of those were probably away from home in daylight, so say 10 were home, of which 8 are fatalities and 2 survivors. Debris from the severed floors falls primarily into the plaza and water features below, possibly some onto South 10th Street and Farnam Street. Since many people will be outdoors socializing, figure 24 casualties, of which 8 are fatalities and 16 are survivors. Most casualties in this area will have crush/impact injuries.

A cluster of businesses includes the historic Poppleton Block building along with several other structures built alongside it. The Downtown Coffee Company is between Matsu Sushi and Urbane Salon & Day Spa. The others include Shahi India Grill (on the far side of Matsu Sushi), The Nail Shop (next to Urbane Salon), and Omaha Visitors center along Farnam Street. The roofs of the buildings are damaged, and Shahi catches fire. Civilian casualties on the sidewalk and street take direct damage from the disintegration beam plus some impact damage from the falling debris. Lots of people will be out in daylight. Figure 30 casualties, of which 5 are fatalities, 10 serious, and 15 minor to moderate. This area has a lot of beam injuries because it hit street level in front of the Downtown Coffee Company.

Omaha Ambulance Services

Local-Omaha has lousy ambulance coverage compared to Terramagne-Omaha.

Our Accreditation
The Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems is proud to announce that Children’s Hospital Pediatric & Neonatal Transport, a critical care ground, rotor wing, and fixed wing transport service, was awarded accreditation on April 9, 2016.
Children’s Pediatric & Neonatal Critical Care Transport provides highly skilled nurse/paramedic/ NNP teams to care for pediatric and neonatal patients. Children’s Hospital & Medical Center Omaha operates and maintains the fleet of ground ambulances. Air Methods Corporation operates and maintains the fleet of 2 EC130 helicopters and 1 Pilatus PC 12 fixed wing.

Based on stated capacities, Children’s Hospital & Medical Center Critical Care Transport must be one of L-Omaha's major ambulance fleets. In T-Omaha, they have a mass-casualty ambulance with a field doctor and at least two field nurses, but it's optimized for pediatric casualties.

The Glenwood Fire & Rescue Department was founded in 1876. Today the GVFD has 22 volunteer firefighters and 13 paid EMS personnel.
The department responds to approximately 300 fire calls and 1200 EMS calls each year with 8 different trucks and 3 ALS medic units. We also respond mutual aid to assist area departments.

They actually send 2 of their ALS ambulances and 1 firetruck, despite the distance, because usually it's Omaha supporting them on really bad fires that overwhelm local resources.

Omaha Hospitals

T-America: Freeman Family Hospital (15th & Farnam)
L-America: CHI Health Clinic Family Medicine (15th & Farnam)
312 S 15th Street, Omaha, NE 68102

This is the closest hospital to the Gene Leahy Mall (one block west), Stan's house, and Lawrence's house. It was named after Daniel Freeman, a Nebraska physician and homesteader, also a Civil War veteran. Freeman Family Hospital started out as a hospital for colored people -- the first of its kind in Omaha -- and has kept up with covering underserved populations. This is the only hospital in Omaha with experience treating soups.

Freeman's fields an extensive fleet of medical and transport vehicles. The two larger box ambulances are MICU and ALS. The smaller box ambulance is BLS. The van ambulance is a drunk truck. The minivan comes in NEMT and ADA-NEMT formats.

Patient Shuttlebuses (3, 1 each of small, medium, large)

Shuttlebuses are used for non-emergency transport of patients, guests, and/or medical personnel in groups.

CAPACITY
• Under 15 Passengers (Non-CDL)
• 15 to 27 Passengers
• Over 27 Passengers

Freeman Family Hospital Shuttlebus Small
The small shuttlebus has a wheelchair lift in the back. A track system in the floor makes it possible to dock wheelchairs, cargo, or seats to fit up to 14 passengers.

Freeman Family Hospital Shuttlebus Medium Exterior
The medium shuttlebus has a wheelchair lift in the back. A track system in the floor makes it possible to dock wheelchairs, cargo, or seats to fit up to 25 passengers.

Freeman Family Hospital Shuttlebus Large Exterior
The large shuttlebus has a wheelchair lift in the back. A track system in the floor makes it possible to dock wheelchairs, cargo, or seats to fit up to 43 passengers.

Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (ADA-NEMT) Wheelchair Van (3)

Substance Emergency Transports (3)
In a fleet of ambulances, Terramagne-America typically subdivides them by type. The substance emergency transport or "drunk truck" is equipped with Sober-Up patches, Narcan, and first aid supplies to treat alcohol poisoning, drug overdose, and other substance abuse issues. It can also handle other low-level calls, saving the Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support for more complex calls. The minimalist interior makes it faster and easier to clean, compared with a fully-equipped ambulance. This ensures that intoxicated people get to a safe place, whether they only need a friend to sit with them or need a doctor.

EMS Cars (2)
These can be used to transport any medical personnel where needed, faster than a large ambulance could travel. They're also good for hauling medical supplies to staff a first aid booth or to restock ambulances at a disaster scene. Behind the permanent front seats, the floor has a docking system so different seats or cargo modules can be attached.

Motorcycle Ambulance (4)
This type of motorcycle ambulance says "First Responder" so it can be used by EMTs or Paramedics. Freeman's fields two of each. The combination of two hardcases on the sides and one on the back allows for separation of materials. Diverse first aid supplies go on one side, trauma supplies on the other, and medical tools in the back such as the oxygen tank strapped next to it. These are used primarily in parks, alleys, crowded events, and other places where a larger ambulance couldn't go.

Basic Life Support (BLS) Ambulance (6 including 1 for soups, 1 pediatric, and 1 geriatric)
(The BLS typically deploys 2 EMT-Basics but can deploy 1 Paramedic or EMT-Intermediate and 1 EMT-Basic.)

Advanced Life Support (ALS) Ambulance (3 including 1 for soups)
(The ALS can deploy 2-3 EMT-Intermediates, 1 Paramedic and 1-2 EMT Intermediates, or all paramedics.)

Studies show that having more personnel makes tasks go faster, and better trained personnel improve the quality of service. However, not every department has enough people or budget to field all paramedics.

Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) Ambulance (2)
(The MICU can be deployed with 2-4 paramedics or 1 field doctor and 2-3 field nurses.)

Specialty Care Team and Critical Care Team (SCT/CCT) Ambulance (1 each)
(The SCT/CCT often deploys with 1 Paramedic and 1+ Specialty Care Transport Nurse or Critical Care Transport Nurse, sometimes with 1 Field Doctor and 1 Field Nurse, but the teams are really assembled to meet individual patient needs.)

Air Medical Transport (AMT) Ambulance Aircraft (1)
(The AMT typically deploys with 1-2 Air Nurses.)

Ambulance Bus (1)
(The ambulance bus typically deploys 1 driver who is often a Paramedic or EMT, 2 Field Doctors, and 4 Field Nurses. It can carry 18 patients lying flat.)
