One thing I'm not clear on: does this rely on sunlight, or gro-lamps? It may still be worth doing even if it relies on generated energy to work, since you save space, and don't need tractors and so forth, but it would be more efficient if it was based on sunlight.
That may vary depending on the building design; there are many of those. Most seem to use a lot of glass, so I suspect that sunlight is a key factor in growing crops. Some illustrations show the farms lit by night, so they may also supplement sunlight with grow-lights. Closer research into individual buildings would probably reveal what they are using as a light source.
Way to make it slightly more efficient: power the gro-lamps with solar power and wind power. :-D
Indeed, most skyfarms seem to include alternative power in their designs. Wind and solar seem the most popular, but I've also seen some that use geothermal heat pumps. Biofuels are also listed sometimes. Some vertical farming designs go for water conservation, with huge rainwater cisterns on the roof; others have living roofs instead. Almost all skyfarm buildings are very densely planned to incorporate many different technologies so that they are carbon-neutral or even carbon-negative and very efficient.
Sweet!
Very cool site!
