Poem: "Tasting Your Way Around the Sea"
This poem came out of the May 4, 2021 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired and sponsored by Shirley Barrette.
Warning: This is all food and prone to make people hungry, including for things that may or may not be available in your area.
"Tasting Your Way Around the Sea"
Mediterranean cuisine
all hangs together,
yet each nation
has its own flavor.
Spanish food is
washed in garlic
and olive oil,
dotted with ham
and crunchy nuts.
It is paella and gazpacho,
tortillas and croquetas.
Italian food is brightened
with balsamic vinegar
and bathed in olive oil,
spiced with sweet basil
and wild oregano.
It is pasta and polenta,
osso buco and tiramisu.
Macedonian food relies
on vegetables -- tomatoes,
cucumbers, red peppers.
It is ajvar and malidzano,
jufki and pastrmalija.
Turkish food is pure
and powerful, made of
eggplant and lamb,
onions and garlic.
It is doner kebab, pilav,
helva, and Turkish coffee.
Palestinian food springs from
pomegranates and lentils,
yogurt and dates.
It is kibbee bi-siniyyeh,
musakhan, mahshi lift,
fukharit 'adas, rummaniyya,
salatat al-bundura, and nabulsi.
Egyptian cuisine is rich with
apricots and honey, cheese,
nuts, chickpeas, and rabbit.
It is molokheyyah and basbousa,
maḥshi waraak enab and gibna.
Tunisian cuisine is complex,
full of rosewater and coriander,
chermoula, mint, and harissa.
It is charred black crusts
and tuna-filled everything,
shakshuka and Tunisian tajin.
Moroccan food is sweet and savory,
layered with cumin and saffron, parsley,
pickled lemons, figs, and ras el hanout.
It is couscous and tagine, harira,
bastilla, rfissa, and mechoui.
No matter where you go, there are
always delicious discoveries when
tasting your way around the sea.
