"To a Syrian in Vermont"

[Monday, March 9, 2015]

As we arrived,
the woods were
already greening
toward summer.

When the maples
caught fire in autumn,
their scarlet leaves
assured us that we
were far from home.

In winter, their logs
warmed our hearths.

With spring, they wept
sugar tears to feed us.

That is why maples
always mean hope
to a Syrian in Vermont.

Notes:

This was composed by a Syrian refugee in Rutledge, Ayah Hafez Kahlil, for his poetry class at Middlebury College. Ayah is creating a framework of symbolism for Syrians living in Vermont.

Maple trees, especially sugar maples, are associated with Vermont. Read some of their symbolism.
