I found that during the Big Unpleasant Conversation this winter, and immediately wanted to mail it back in time to myself. I've dealt with so many conversations where people pulled some of these tricks.
I get distracted by the word "derailment." I get an image of a discussion on a train track, and then being tipped off the track. It's bad to cause a conversation to crash and die--I'd definitely want to avoid that--but it also seems bad to restrict a conversation to just on one track.
