How to Cook Meat

I got to discussing how to cook meat with a friend, and thought other folks might enjoy the information. Also, if you have questions about meat, ask a butcher. Most grocery stores have someone in the area behind the meat counter; look for a service bell to summon a butcher. If you go to a butcher shop, the butcher will usually be within immediate reach.

Easier meat ideas:

cooking pre-seasoned meat from the "gourmet deli" section of the supermarket

putting flavors on a slab of meat

mixing a few things with ground beef for taco filling or hamburgers

dump soups / stews

Harder meat ideas:

multi-stage cooking processes

wrapping one meat around another meat

mixing ground meats together

making sausage or other blended meat preparations

smoking meat

salt-curing meat

barbecue / grilling

Easier meats to cook:

beef

bison (similar to beef, but leaner and sweeter)

lamb

Harder meats to cook:

pork (risky if underdone)

poultry (risky if underdone)

fish (not only risky if underdone, but easy to wreck)

Appliances for easy cooking:

Foreman Grill
You turn it on, stick a plain or flavored piece of meat inside, wait five minutes, and eat. Heat your vegetable side dish while the meat is cooking.

Crockpot
You turn it on, throw in meat and/or vegetables, ignore for several hours, then eat.

Meat Thermometer
So you know how done your meat is, if you're not sure.

Cookbooks

I recommend getting a good beginner cookbook. Here are a few ideas:

Once you know more about it, cooking meat becomes easier and less intimidating. There are many options that require minimal effort or skill, and a few that require minimal time.
