Fun New Year's Resolutions

Most New Year's resolutions are chores. Things that need to be done, or cleaned; personal improvements that are hard work. But a healthy life balance includes things that are fun, relaxing, or otherwise enjoyable. If you include some resolutions that you want to do, then you are more likely to complete some of them. These include a range of options including things to complete in one day, things to repeat a few times or for a limited period, and year-long projects. Here are some ideas ...

ACTIVITIES

Go on a fun date with your sweetie or someone new. You can also date yourself!

Drive around and explore new scenery.

Visit a zoo, museum, or other interesting location.

Attend an event such as a street fair or a music festival.

Shopping spree! This is great if you got holiday money. You are supposed to spend that on something fun. Take a picture of yourself with it and send to the giver to show them what they bought you.

Spend a day, or at least several hours, lounging around in pajamas. Read in bed or flop on the couch to watch television. Give yourself time to unwind. This works best on a day with crappy weather, so you can look through the window and be glad you don't have to go out in that.

Take a vacation. If possible, travel to a different environment than your home for more novel experiences.

Get a window or lawn ornament that makes you smile when you see it.

FOOD

Learn to cook. If you already know how, then learn to cook a new food or cuisine.

Buy yourself an interesting new appliance or gadget and learn how to use it. If you received one as a holiday gift, you can make it your target.

Get a new cookbook, or dig up an old one that you rarely look at. Browse and mark recipes to try.

Try different food than your usual. This can be a new ingredient, dish, or a whole cuisine.

Explore a new restaurant.

Host a dinner party or potluck. Consider a playful theme.

Learn how to make mocktails that taste better than boozy ones. You want things with amazing colors, flavors, special effects, exotic ingredients -- anything that creates a real WOW factor. They are not only fun to drink yourself, they will make you popular with your nondrinking friends. Indulge with good supplies like floral tonic water, artisan soda, or the many bitters.

HOBBIES

Learn to play a new game.

Host a game night.

Try out a new hobby. You don't have to make a big commitment. Just explore and see if you like it.

Listen to more music. Set a target number of songs, hours of listening, days done, etc.

Buy yourself an album or music site subscription to explore different music than your usual.

Read more books. Set a target number of titles, hours of reading, days done, etc.

Ask for recommendations from librarians, bookstore owners, or your friends to try new authors.

Join a book club. You might aim to make a new friend or attend a certain number of meetings.

Take up BookCrossing. Set a goal of how many titles to find or release into the wild.

Do something with arts and crafts. It doesn't have to be perfect, just fun.

Write fanfic or make other fanworks. The whole point is to enjoy your passion; there's no money or pressure involved.

WELLNESS

List some things that make you happy.

Pick something that makes you happy and set a target to do more of it.

Spend more time with your family. Set a family day/night and choose activities. It can be the same, like a Sunday supper, or a different one each time.

Get a pet. Dogs encourage you to walk more, cats purring have health benefits, watching fish is soothing, and so on.

Take a walk or a hike.

Bike for scenery rather than exercise.

Buy some funny workout shirts.

Plant a garden. If you choose a vegetable or herb garden, you will get tasty things to eat. If you choose a wildlife garden, you will attract interesting critters to watch.

Schedule time to relax.

Treat yourself to a massage, spa, or other pampering.

What other New Year's resolutions can you think of that would be fun and enjoyable instead of tedious?
