Content notes for "Mending the Broken"

These are the content notes for "Mending the Broken."

I believe that the yarn we spin is capable of mending the broken warp and woof of our life!
-- Mahatma Gandhi

Handspun yarn is interesting to make. You can knit many things with it. Consider small projects, contrasting yarn, layering garments, and modular knitting patterns. This alpaca wrap is a good example.

Shiv uses this pattern for a Tassel Blanket, which creates a triangular shawl if you stop halfway through, and then adds fringe. A shawl may take about a week to make. It can be worn in various ways.

Roving yarn has minimal twist and can theoretically be used to spin or knit. However, it doesn't last well if knitted.

Slub yarn has variable width; the thicker tufts are called slubs. There are text and video instructions for making it.

Shiv's original yarn bundle included a variety of slub yarns, shaggy yarns, fine spun yarns, and roving yarns all in pale natural shades. To this Shiv added oatmeal tweed and Silver Bling art yarn.

Lockspinning involves adding tufts of wool over a thin yarn core to make shaggy yarn. This video shows how to do lockspinning. Here are more free spinning videos and tutorials.

Wool goats include mohair and cashmere breeds.
