Indigo Bunting!

I just saw an indigo bunting on my birdfeeder! Squee, squee!

We've had several pairs in our yard for years; they're not as rare as they used to be. But this is the first time I've seen one on a regular feeder. Usually they only come to a thistle feeder, and I couldn't afford to put that out this year. It's uncommon to get a really close look at indigo buntings; they're kind of shy. So pretty, so bright blue. I am happy to have them.

Thistle is expensive?
Thistle seed is among the most expensive types of bird seed, considerably higher than a general-purpose birdseed blend.
Wow! That is some serious blue!

I had a bunch of old pet bird seed that I tossed out by the compost heap. The seed has since sprouted and there is a constant flock of the usual local birds, but I've been getting some really wierd ones lately. I have to find a good California bird book to figure out what they are.
Yes, indigo buntings are really bright blue. They look kind of like dyed sparrows.

We have volunteer wheat, millet, and sunflowers in our yard sometimes from birdseed. It's kind of interesting.

We used to have bluebirds when I was very young, but I haven't seen any in years. There are blue herons quite nearby; they like living under the bridges over the drainage ditches. Blue jays come and go; it's been several years since I saw any in our yard.
How lucky! They are such beautiful birds. (My icon's a bluebird, not an indigo bunting, but it's the closest I have.)
Pretty bird!
Are those birds by any chance related to this nursery rhyme:

Bye, baby Bunting,
Daddy’s gone a-hunting,
Gone to get a rabbit skin
To wrap the baby Bunting in.
