Character notes for "In Search of a Sanctuary"

These are the character notes for "In Search of a Sanctuary."

Gretchen Ehrenreich -- She has fair skin that burns easily, brown eyes, and wavy chestnut hair usually pulled back in a bun. Her heritage is Danish, German, and Swedish. She speaks Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, and Greek. She is 48 years old in 2016. Gretchen prefers elegant women's wear in black, white, and red with matching accessories. She likes things fashionable but not fussy. She uses a variety of media in her art, but favors zetetic ones like creme pastels.
Gretchen earned a Diploma in Freie Kunst (Fine Art) at Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany. She went on to get a Master of Fine Art in Public Art and New Artistic Strategies with a certificate in Art Gallery Management from the same school. After that, she opened an art gallery, Farbe Einfühlung. Originally it took a more literal interpretation, Feeling in Color; but after she met an abstract painter with Empathy, it took on the more typical meaning, the Color of Empathy. As Gretchen's interest in superpowered and zetetic art grew, she realized that new materials weren't always as safe as advertised. So she went back to Bauhaus and earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Kunst und Design (Art and Design), doing the scientific research on zetetic art and supplies, with a particular interest in determining the safety of new materials and promoting the work of superpowered artists. It has been a great success. However, her visual focus makes her easily distractible by bright colors or moving objects.
Gretchen and Gerrit lived in Weimar, Germany until recently. They had bought a 1-bedroom Lagoon Villa freestanding condominium as a vacation home at the InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort, Raa Atoll, Maldives. Much to their disgust, the other rich people objected to the rising number of soups in the Maldives, and badgered InterContinental to pull out and close the resort. In protest, Gretchen and Gerrit moved to the island, which later became the Uighur refuge Panahgah.

Freie Kunst (Fine Art)
The academic focus of the Fine Art programme is to develop and foster authentic and professional artistic individuality. The curriculum is based on the examination of contemporary issues and lines of discourse, relevant artistic media and artistic strategies. The professors and teaching staff intensively consult with students throughout their studies. Personal mentoring and critiquing play an increasingly significant role as the programme progresses.

Public Art an New Artistic Strategies (M.F.A.)
at Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany

Standard duration of programme Deadline for application Application
4 Semesters 31 March How to apply

The Faculty of Art and Design at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar established the English-language, postgraduate M. F. A. degree programme in »Public Art and New Artistic Strategies« in the winter semester 2001/02. As the first and only master‘s degree programme of its kind in Germany, it prepares fine arts students for working in the public sphere and provides them with the skills required for effective artistic intervention.
This degree programme is targeted at international students and was established with start-up capital provided by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Students from around the world participate in this MFA programme, and German students benefit from the vast network of international partner universities where they can study for one or two semesters abroad. Enrolment in this degree programme is limited to 40 students. Foreign students spend four semesters studying in Weimar, while German students are required to study abroad for at least one semester. New students are only permitted to enrol in the winter semester.

Contents
The following four areas are crucial to artistic work in public space and are investigated in depth during this four-semester degree programme:
Art, Architecture, and History
Art Society and Public Space
Situations, Interventions und New Artistic Strategies
The artistic and theoretical examination of these thematic areas takes place in »real projects«, i.e. context-related works are developed and installed in public space in cooperation with various partners. The ideas for artistic intervention in public space originate from the students‘ artistic approaches and entail independent development of an individual work. The forms of interventions include temporary installations, sculptures, actions and performances. Digital media has expanded the scope of public space to include virtual environments. The works frequently make reference to current political, cultural and social issues, as well as the status of public art. In addition to theoretically examining individual positions, the term »public« is also a central research topic. The programme also emphasizes other themes, such as integrating the fine arts into architecture and landscapes, investigating the culture of commemoration, the function of memorials and role of monuments in public space. The discussion also focuses on aspects of globalism, urbanism and migration.

The »Master of Fine Arts« degree is a second-level professional qualification. The master‘s examination is comprised of a final exhibition, an oral and written examination (master‘s thesis and presentation).

Terramagne-Germany also offers certificates in managing an art gallery, curating a museum, running an art supply store, hosting an artist colony, serving as a business manager or agent for artists, and other careers. Gretchen took the one in Art Gallery Management.

Doctoral degree programme (Ph.D.) Kunst und Design (Art and Design) – Doctor of Philosophy
at Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany

This doctoral degree programme offers advanced academic qualification to artists and designers who have already attained a master‘s degree or Diplom from a college/university of art or design. The three-year programme concludes with a doctoral thesis, equally comprised of a scientific part and artistic/design part.
With this requirement the Faculty of Art and Design offers a PhD degree like no other in Germany with dual qualification in both practical and academic areas. Both qualifications can be applied to the field of teaching and instruction, art exhibition, cultural event management, or at cultural institutions.

Mentoring system and academic programme
Each doctoral candidate is personally supervised by two university professors for the duration of his/her studies, whereby one mentor is responsible for the scientific and the other for the artistic/design focus of the degree programme. One of the two mentors must come from the Faculty of Art and Design or the Faculty of Media of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The second mentor may come from another faculty or university. The curriculum of the three-year degree programme is chiefly designed to support the candidate‘s scientific research, conducted in concentrated periods of two weeks each during the academic term. The programme is largely comprised of a graduate seminar, graduate colloquium and courses in the areas of key qualification. These are supplemented by additional courses (seminars, projects, conferences, workshops), prepared and conducted by the candidates themselves.

Gretchen did her scientific research on zetetic art and supplies, with a particular interest in determining the safety of new materials and promoting the work of superpowered artists. She wanted to find safe ways of incorporating these into her gallery.

Gerrit Ehrenreich -- He has ruddy skin, brown eyes, and wavy dark hair cut short. His heritage is primarily German with a few Jewish ancestors. He speaks English, French, German, and Italian. He is 50 years old in 2016. Gerrit is the husband of Gretchen. He prefers upscale menswear in shades of gray, white, and blue; but in hot weather he likes more casual linen shirts and pants. He uses accessories of black leather.
Gerrit earned a Bachelor Urbanistik (Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning) at Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany. He went on to get a Master of Science Studies in Integrated Urban Development and Design at the same school. He worked for a while in Germany around Weimar, but as he gained experience, he got more and more calls from other countries. So Gerrit went back to Bauhaus for a Doctoral program in European Urbanism. While he makes an effort to include citizens in community planning, he has little experience of the lower classes, having started off in the upper middle class and climbed from there. He's not prejudiced, just doesn't realize what other people's lives are actually like.
Gerrit and Gretchen lived in Weimar, Germany until recently. In protest, Gerrit and Gretchen moved to the island, which later became the Uighur refuge Panahgah.

Bachelor Urbanistik (Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning)
at Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany

Are you interested in the relationship between the planning of our environment
and society? Do you wonder how landscape conservation can be combined with
the interests of economic development? Or are you interested in finding answers to social and environmental issues concerning the quality of life in cities in Europe and around the world? If so, then come and study in Weimar.
A key aspect of the study courses in Urban Planning is the intensive supervision
and tutoring provided by our colleagues from the fields of architecture and urban design and planning. Our close connections to the renowned architectural courses at our faculty offer future urban designers a solid grounding in the assessment of built and spatial structures and a schooled eye for aspects of design.
A further key quality of the Bachelors of Science in Urban Planning is its university-level academic standard, which introduces students to the practiceof research. The academic character of the course means that students are well placed for finding qualified and stimulating work in the job market and in professional practice. Graduates may take up a position in the profession or elect to continue their studies in the consecutive Master’s study programme in Urban Studies or one of the other postgraduate degree courses on offer, which can in turn be followed by one of our Ph. D. programmes.

What does the study programme offer?
The study course is predominantly project-based with a strong emphasis on social and planning sciences and the architectural and spatial skills required by town planners. Alongside the planning project, the core module, a mix of parallel compulsory and elective modules communicate a fundamental background in the social sciences, design and planning policy. The study course has three main pillars: a strong basis in the social sciences, the architectural design of the built environment and an international orientation.
The course covers a breadth of topics required for the planning professions. The standard duration of this complex qualification is therefore eight semesters.
The core subject areas introduce students to the dimensions of social action required for practicing in the field and that are essential for relevant academic research:
_ town planning and socio-scientific urban research
_ theory, history and politics of the city and planning
_ urban design, housing and urban conservation
_ economics and technical infrastructure of spatial planning
All coursework is conducted in German. In the sixth semester, students spend a period abroad studying at a partner university or working with a practice partner. Students from abroad can spend this semester studying at another university in Germany.
In addition, before beginning the final thesis, students are required to complete 10 weeks of practical experience in Germany. This period gives students an opportunity to examine the German planning culture first-hand and students are expected to apply what they have learned in projects of their own. We recommend placements with planning authorities at an urban or regional level or comparable institutions as well as in public or non-public planning areas, for example in commercial planning offices, non-government organisations or research institutes.
After completion and defence of the final thesis the Faculty of Architecture awards students the qualification of »Bachelor of Science« (B. Sc.). This eight semesterqualification is recognised by the German Federal Chamber of Architects and entitles the holder, on completion of a necessary period in professional practice as a town planner, to officially enrol in the registry of architects.

IUDD Master of Science Studies
Integrated Urban Development and Design (IUDD)
at Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany

With the Master's Programme »Integrated Urban Development and Design« (IUDD) we train students to develop abilities that will encourage them to react to transformation processes that are typical for the beginning of the 21st century: Urban landscapes of dispersed character, global markets as well as global challenges in environment and society, virtual spaces, powerful actors in the construction business and postmodern lifestyles are raising new challenges for the spatial competences of planners and designers dedicated to larger scales but with a sense for detail.
The aim of the consecutive programme is the training of local and international "curators for urban space". This takes place through a combination of spatial scientific-analytical and urban developmental-design oriented education, as well as through an integrated practical component or an in-depth semester in China.
Students have the choice between two specialisations or study programmes:
a) »Reflective Urban Practice« with the »Model Projects« practical module in the 3rd semester
or
b) »Advanced Urbanism« with an academic exchange at Tongji University and a double degree.
The programme aims to deepen, expand and apply technical and methodological skills already acquired. These should also be considered in the context of international perspectives and enable interdisciplinary work. The programme is committed to define, analyse, include and streamline these diverse factors in the sense of Integrated Urban Development as an holistic approach and its linkages to urban design in the metropolitan as well as rural-urban context.

European Urbanism

at Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany

The doctoral program offers doctoral students a diverse curriculum in
the fields of urban development, urban planning, urban sociology, spatial planning,
urban monument preservation and project development. This enables doctoral students to view their research topics from previously
unfamiliar perspectives and to take on new tasks. You will
develop into a reflective expert for urban space with
career prospects in science and practice.
The duration of the doctorate is set to last six semesters, making it easier to
calculate for both domestic and foreign graduates. The academic
degree Dr.-Ing. or Dr. phil. can be acquired.

Stag Leap (Via Sacheverell) -- She has fair skin, blue eyes, and shaggy blonde hair to her shoulders. She is slender and light on her feet. Her heritage is American. She speaks English and Spanish. She is trying to learn Dhivehi. Via is 19 years old in 2016. She owns a 1-bedroom Beach Pool Villa, which was her signing bonus when she took a job as the island's teleporter. For a hobby, she enjoys beachcombing and making crafts with whatever she finds. She has a nose for trouble, though.
In high school, Via visited Mexico, which got her interested in geography. She started college at age 17 and graduated at 18 with an Associate of Science in Geography from American River College in Sacramento, California. She also earned certificates in Fitness Specialist and International Studies. Via had intended to take a Get a Life travel year after earning her Associate's Degree, then decide whether to pursue a Bachelor's Degree or look for a job. She visited Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Equatorial Guinea, Cape Verde, Morocco, Spain, Italy, Greece, India, and the Maldives. The last stop was supposed to be Australia, but Stag Leap got a job offer from what was then the InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort, Raa Atoll, Maldives. She decided to stay there and skip Australia. Much to her frustration, she hadn't even worked there a year when the rich people objected to the rising number of soups in the Maldives, and badgered InterContinental to pull out and close the resort. They offered her a job in another country, but Stag Leap didn't want to follow bigots. She stayed on the island, which later became the Uighur refuge Panahgah.
Origin: While studying geography, Via began experiencing odd "flashes" of imagining herself to be in the place she was concentrating on. She also had a tendency to practice her geography while doing sports or fitness activities. One day while she was practicing jumps, she teleported to Half Moon Bay Beach. She couldn't figure out how to teleport back, so she had to catch a bus instead. It took weeks for Via to learn how to do it on purpose, but then she got the hang of it and discovered a real knack for memorizing places.
Uniform: Via likes cute women's wear in black, white, and deep pink with matching accessories of pink or black-and-white. She also appreciates travel collections.
Qualities: Good (+2) Extrovert, Good (+2) Fast, Good (+2) Geography, Good (+2) Gymnastics, Good (+2) Visual-Spatial Intelligence
Poor (-2) Nose for Trouble
Powers: Good (+2) Teleportation
Motivation: To explore.

The stag leap is a jump with one or both legs bent.

The Get a Life program assists creative youth in personal development. It offers tour guides and travel programs at two levels, one for people who want to travel between high school and college, the other for those who want to do it after college; and participants may do both if they wish. It includes many options ranging from two to three month summer sessions on up to full year sessions. About 10% of high school graduates do not immediately go into higher education or employment, and taking a travel year is a popular option. Some travelers choose a regional destination and meander within it; others cover the whole globe. In the year-long package, it's common to choose three or four different continents and move from one to another. Themed packages are available for people who wish to study particular subjects such as architecture, crafts, literature, or the environment. Another popular option is to visit multiple countries all sharing a world language, such as Spanish or French. The formal packages customarily include at least one "serendipity" stop, and travelers may choose more if they wish, up to selecting the entire itinerary at random. Get a Life also offers support for people 18+ who wish to backpack or otherwise travel on their own but still have access to the group's hostels, maps, lesson plans, and other resources.
The program attracts primarily writers, artists, and musicians but also dancers, sculptors, computer programmers, and various other creative types. It upholds the principle that in order to make great art, you need to experience life. Traveling around the world is a terrific way to cram a lot of experience into a relatively short span of time. Often participants find a culture or career they love, which shapes the rest of their life and work. College-age travelers are more likely to find a life partner. (Participants are encouraged, but not required, to use a long-term form of birth control while traveling, so that is available to everyone at no extra cost.) The program also supports travelers in finding places to live and work after returning home, with ties to a wide range of publishers, galleries, and performance art companies.
Prices vary depending on destination and length of session. However, Get a Life is heavily subsidized both by the National Foundation for the Arts and the Department of Education. Another major source of funding comes from their own graduates. Most successful graduates fund at least one new traveler; many have set up ongoing scholarships. Those who can't afford to contribute such sums can choose between a general scholarship fund supported by graduates, or one open to the public at large, both of which offer a variety of categories in which applicants can qualify.
Get a Life is so effective at improving maturity, tolerance, diversity, and excellence in its participants that many high schools recommend it to creative seniors instead of going directly to college. Conversely, most colleges -- and almost all fine arts schools -- view it more as alternative education than as a vacation in terms of accepting applicants. Often they let high school seniors apply and then defer enrollment in college until after completing their Get a Life tour. College seniors may announce plans to travel after college, and use that to gain admission to classes that will help them in that endeavor. This results in a higher level of artistic quality and cultural awareness in Terramagne.

World Citizen Passport
This document was requested by the Dr. Vandana Shiva, and it counts with the blessing of the grandparents and masters who represent the ancestral wisdom, as one, we offer to every single activist, world citizen and organizations that fight in order to protect Mother Earth.
The World Citizen Passport, identifies you as an activist, nature agent, cultural ambassador or commander, that understands that Mother Earth has no boundaries and that it is our duty to protect her, in general, everyone who in any way promotes an extraordinary behavior in defense of Mother Earth can use this passport of world citizenship.
Furthermore this document can be used in every associated establishment that we can find in the Golden pages, to obtain different benefits or to register your participation in the events that support this cause
.

In Terramagne, the World Citizenship Passport is recognized by a majority of nations and is available in 11 world languages. However, it must be earned instead of received as a birthright. Notably, it does NOT require citizenship in a recognized nation, making it available to stateless people, refugees, citizens of unrecognized nations, and others for whom the common travel documents may be unobtainable or undesirable. Obtaining a World Citizenship Passport requires:
* documenting identity through a variety of possible options
* speaking at least two languages well enough for basic use, one of which must be a world language (English, Spanish)
* visiting at least 12 countries, or living in at least 4, on at least two continents (or island regions)
* demonstrating fluency with travel plans and related arrangements
* practicing multicultural awareness and diplomacy
* understanding at least 6 world issues (climate change, gender equality, oceans, peace, sustainability, water)
* making a contribution to a cause of global significance such as world peace or the environment (volunteer)

The idea is that world citizens have a breadth of experience and a depth of tolerance which makes them a community well suited to helping others get along and get around the planet. In light of this, they get discounts and other perks from many airlines, hotels, and other businesses that cater to travelers. Most embassies take them seriously, and some countries prefer their diplomats to earn World Citizenship.

After he graduated from high school, Manik spent the summer earning a Certificate 3 in Tour Guiding at Maldives National University. With that in hand, he got a job leading tours around Malé for a year. When he was 20, his boss wanted to promote him and paid for him to get an Advanced Certificate in Hospitality and Tourism Studies. He spent another two years supervising the tour program. By 23, Manik had gotten interested in the resorts and had saved enough money to get a Bachelor of International Hospitality Management. At 25, he went to work for a small resort and stayed there for three years. When he was 28, they got a liquor license, so he quit and went back to school for a Master in Hospitality and Tourism Management. At 30, Manik got a job as island manager at what was then the InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort, Raa Atoll, Maldives. He was 34 when the rich people objected to the rising number of soups in the Maldives, and badgered InterContinental to pull out and close the resort. Outraged by the bigotry against people helping keep the Maldives above water, Manik and his family stayed on the island, which later became the Uighur refuge Panahgah. He also took advantage of the time to earn a Certificate 3 in Superpower Relations.
Malik likes comfortable menswear in soft earth tones of white, khaki, and olive. He favors linen shirts and pants in hot weather. He uses brown leather accessories. Abd-Qadir -- a common Islamic term for someone with superpowers. It means Servant of the All-Powerful. The implication is that, as humans are reflections of Allah and His virtues, some are reflecting individual and differing aspects of His universal power. Some use the term only for Muslims, while others use it for everyone, largely depending on whether they see God only in other Muslims or in the whole of humanity. As a volunteer group, the Abd-Qadir use their superpowers for emergency services, much like the Abd-Raheem.
