Poem: "When the Call to Adventure Comes"

This poem came out of the October 6, 2020 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired and sponsored by Anthony Barrette.

"When the Call to Adventure Comes"

"You must not be from around here,"
said the eagle to the albatross
as they soared over the mountains.

"I am not," said the albatross,
"but the oceans are empty of fish
and the mountain streams full."

"You must not be from around here,"
said the prairie dog to the squirrel
as they bounded over the grass.

"I am not," said the squirrel,
"but the trees are growing
farther and farther apart now,
so I better get by on the ground."

"You must not be from around here,"
said the bear to the badger
as they met in the forest.

"I am not," said the badger,
"but my home is too soggy now."

"You must not be from around here,"
said the coyote to the collie
as they ran in the fields.

"I am not," said the collie,
flirting her tail, "but perhaps
you could show me around."

"You must not be from around here,"
said the giraffe to the penguin
as they carefully touched noses.

"I am not," said the penguin,
"but my home has melted
and I must be somewhere."

It is never easy to leave home
and go where you are a stranger.

But when the call to adventure comes,
there is no refusing it, not even in
the world of the animals where
odd leaders have the urge
to migrate to new territory.
