Poem: "Small Town Greetings"

This poem came out of the October 6, 2020 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired and sponsored by Shirley Barrette. It also fills the "feast / celebrate food" square in my 10-1-20 card for the Fall Festival Bingo.

"Small Town Greetings"

In the summers when
we traveled far and wide
in the RV, we would
stop in small towns
at the restaurants.

More often than not,
people would greet us
with, "You must not be
from around here."

It was repetitive,
predictable, as much
as "Good morning."

Sometimes it made us
smile and laugh, or
just shake our heads.

We'd talk about it,
afterwards, wondering
what was up with it.

Eventually we realized
that when they said,
"You must not be
from around here,"

often what they
meant was, "Tell us
about somewhere else."

And so we did.
