Notes for "As Gatekeeper to Your Life"

These are the notes for "As Gatekeeper to Your Life."

Kodee Dameron -- She has caramel skin, brown eyes, and short nappy hair of dark brown. She is 22 years old in 2015. She lives in Omaha, Nebraska. Kodee makes a variety of practical items including clothes, rugs, and furniture. She focuses on customers who want simple, eco-friendly items and sells a lot to Gentle Life communities along with people into green living. Kodee has little if any interest in sex or romance, but people keep saying she'll grow out of the phase because she's still young, and she wonders if they might be right. She likes the idea of asexuality but isn't sure if she really qualifies. She finds it harder to feel around inside herself than to understand things she can touch.
Qualities: Good (+2) Crafter, Good (+2) Flexible, Good (+2) Kinesthetic Intelligence, Good (+2) Simplicity, Good (+2) Tolerant
Poor (-2) Intrapersonal Intelligence

Simone MacEldon -- She has tawny-fair skin, brown eyes, and wavy shoulder-length hair of strawberry blonde. She is tall and thin. She is a lesbian. She is 25 years old in 2015. Simone speaks English and French. She lives in Omaha, Nebraska. Simone earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a Concentration in Race, Ethnicity and Gender Politics and a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. She is currently working on a Master of Science in Political Science with a French minor at the same school. She lives in a sharehouse with several other women, mostly lesbians or bisexuals. This contributes to her tendency to think of queerness primarily as gay and lesbian, secondarily as bi, and everything else as either unnecessary variation, uncertainty, or imagination. Simone volunteers at the local QUILTBAG club, but it isn't very inclusive, so she gets away with things that she shouldn't.
Qualities: Good (+2) Assertive, Good (+2) College Student, Good (+2) Lesbian, Good (+2) Logical-Mathematical Intelligence, Good (+2) Tall
Poor (-2) Intolerant

"Your job is to be you, which includes being the chief beneficiary of all things you do right, the chief victim of all you do wrong, and the one person on Earth who has to live with every choice you make. As gatekeeper to your life, you’re it."
-- Carolyn Hax

The Old Market is a farmer's market in Omaha Nebraska.
Open Saturdays, May 2 - Oct. 17

See a produce calendar for Nebraska. One of Shiv's jobs is visiting the farmer's market to buy whatever is good and cheap at the moment. Within the range of what's in season, usually some is good and some is bad, depending on variables such as weather and pests.

This lovely hoodie, striped in the colors of the asexual flag, used to belong to Heron. It got too tight in the shoulders, thanks to his massage work, so he gave it to Shiv. Despite fraught experiences in foster care, Shiv loves this thing.

Asexuality means having low or no sexual attraction, enough that it creates a divergence from the goals and experiences of sexual people in personal life. Aces sometimes struggle with whether they are "ace enough."

This Asexuality Bingo Card shows some dumb things people say about asexuality.

The labrys is a double-headed axe used to symbolize lesbianism.

The use of English Prime neatly avoids the arguments over "isness" of orientation or other identity. While one might wonder "Am I asexual?" the question of "Do you want to fuck?" tends to come much more clear. This approach may prove useful to people struggling with identity.

"My gender is cactus." While Shiv generally seems masculine, this description also fits him incredibly well.
