Character notes for "Loss Is Like a Wind"

These are the character notes for "Loss Is Like a Wind."

Lola May Wilkinson -- She has pinkish-fair skin with freckles, hazel eyes, and wavy hair of dark blonde that falls to her shoulders. She is nearsighted. She is the wife of Abbott and mother of Ryder (deceased), April, May, June, September, Thatcher, and Webster. They live in Otterville, Indiana. Lola May is 44 when Ryder drowns. She is a good mother who sees herself chiefly through her relationships with other people. She majored in Women's Studies at college and went to work for the local park service, where she organizes activities to entice women outdoors. Lola May also enjoys photography, mostly people or nature. She does crafts like painted rocks, mobiles, and sewing although she's not particularly good at them. However, she doesn't know nearly as much about herself as about others, and she struggles with emotional regulation as a result.
Qualities: Good (+2) Interpersonal Intelligence, Good (+2) Mother, Good (+2) Outdoor Activities, Good (+2) Photographer, Good (+2) Women's Studies
Poor (-2) Intrapersonal Intelligence

Abbott Wilkinson -- He has tawny-fair skin, brown eyes, and short dark hair that is receding. He is the husband of Lola May and father of Ryder (deceased), April, May, June, September, Thatcher, and Webster. They live in Otterville, Indiana. Abbott is 45 years old when Ryder drowns. In high school, Abbott worked as a lifeguard during the summer. Then he earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration and spent several miserable years learning that he hated office work. He quit and went to work for the local park service as a handyman instead, which he liked much better. There he met Lola May and they soon got married. Abbott is a good father who enjoys spending time with his family.
Qualities: Good (+2) Activist, Good (+2) Father, Good (+2) Outdoor Activities, Good (+2) Park Service Worker, Good (+2) Stamina
Poor (-2) Office Work

Ryder Wilkinson -- He had fair skin, short wavy blond hair, and brown eyes. He was tall and gawky. He was the son of Abbott and Lola May, older brother of April, May, June, September, and Thatcher. They live in Otterville, Indiana. Ryder had just turned 15 when he drowned while horsing around on the Markle Mill Dam with several friends. He was devoted to his younger siblings and shared a bedroom with Thatcher.
Qualities: Good (+2) Fishing, Good (+2) High School Student, Good (+2) Older Brother
Poor (-2) Risk Assessment

See Ryder's fish pillow.

April Wilkinson -- She has pinkish-fair skin, brown eyes, and long brown hair usually pulled back in a braid. She has a heart-shaped face. She is the daughter of Abbott and Lola May, younger sister of Ryder (deceased), older sister of May, June, September, Thatcher, and Webster. They live in Otterville, Indiana. April is 14 when Ryder drowns. She is good at most feminine interests and activities. She has a high cold tolerance and enjoys outdoor activities. Like her mother, she loves photography. However, she struggles with math and other rational tasks.
Qualities: Good (+2) Cold Tolerance, Good (+2) Girl Stuff, Good (+2) Photographer
Poor (-2) Logical-Mathematical Intelligence

May Wilkinson -- She has fair skin, brown eyes, and long blonde hair usually worn in two ponytails. She has a round face. She is the daughter of Abbott and Lola May, younger sister of Ryder (deceased) and April, older sister of June, September, Thatcher, and Webster. They live in Otterville, Indiana. May is 12 when Ryder drowns. Bold and athletic, she charges headlong through life. She is persuasive enough to drag her sisters (and sometimes brothers) into adventures, wise or otherwise. She can't sit still for long, though.
Qualities: Good (+2) Athletic, Good (+2) Bold, Good (+2) Persuasive
Poor (-2) Sitting Still

June Wilkinson -- She has fair skin, blue eyes, and long blonde hair usually held back with a headband. She has a heart-shaped face. She is the daughter of Abbott and Lola May, younger sister of Ryder (deceased), April, and May, older sister of September, Thatcher, and Webster. They live in Otterville, Indiana. June is 10 when Ryder drowns. Unlike her sisters, she feels comfortable alone, and she is the most resistant to taking risks. She tends to notice everything around her.
Qualities: Good (+2) Girl Stuff, Good (+2) Introvert, Good (+2) Observant
Poor (-2) Risk Averse

September Wilkinson -- She has fair skin, brown eyes, and short brown hair. She has a round face. She is the daughter of Abbott and Lola May, younger sister of Ryder (deceased), April, May, and June, older sister of Thatcher. They live in Otterville, Indiana. September is 8 when Ryder drowns. Unlike her sisters, she disdains feminine activities and takes pride in her tomboy nature. She dresses in unisex or boyish clothes from places like Tomboy Sawyer and Budding Stem. She tends to notice everything around her.
Qualities: Good (+2) Outdoor Activities, Good (+2) Thinking Outside the Box, Good (+2) Tomboy
Poor (-2) Girl Stuff

Tomboy Sawyer is a Terramagne-American brand of clothing for children and tweens. They offer rugged play clothes that appeal to tomboys.

Thatcher Wilkinson -- He has fair skin, brown eyes, and dark blond hair buzzed short. He is the son of Abbott and Lola May, younger brother of Ryder (deceased), April, May, June, and September, older brother of Webster. They live in Otterville, Indiana. Thatcher has a high baseline of happiness and quickly bounces back even from serious hardships. He has a strong activist bent and takes practical steps to solve problems, good at both short-term and long-term planning. However, he doesn't do well with "big picture" questions and has little interest in the church his family attends.
Qualities: Good (+2) Activist, Good (+2) Cheerful
Poor (-2) Existential Intelligence

Webster Wilkinson -- He has fair skin, blue eyes, and short brown hair. He is the son of Abbott and Lola May, younger brother of Ryder (deceased), April, May, June, September, and Thatcher. They live in Otterville, Indiana. Webster was born on September 22, three and a half years after his older brother Ryder drowned. As a baby, he has a great sense of adventure but no sense of self-preservation, which is utterly nerve-wracking for his parents and older siblings. However, Webster also has a knack for connecting with people and weaving them closer together.
Qualities: Good (+2) Adventurous, Good (+2) Interpersonal Intelligence
Poor (-2) No Sense of Self-Preservation
