Origin: Madison's stepfather sexually abused her. One day while he was using his mouth on her, she wished that she could melt away through the floor. Instead she turned to water and he drowned. After that, Madison ran away from home and was soon picked up by a Kraken operative.

Without that support, she starts to dry out, first becoming uncomfortable and then taking damage.
Motivation: This is MY body, and I decide what happens to it.
Madison's common wardrobe is beige and white accented with blush pink, powder blue, and lavender. She has a set of French T-shirts to go with colored jeans or shorts. Her skirts, spring dresses, and evening dresses are all pastels too. She has shoes to match.
Cotillion skills cover a range of etiquette and life skills. In T-America, the typical progression is Junior Cotillion (5th-6th grade), Middle Cotillion (7th-8th grade), and Senior Cotillion (9th-12th grade). Middle students mentor Junior students, and Senior students mentor Middle students. Senior students typically have college-age mentors who previously completed the program. A debutante ball marks their official entrance into society after graduation from high school.
Pumps (Funda Nacar) -- She has fair skin with black eyes and short black hair. She is tall and strong with broad beefy shoulders, a flat chest, slim waist, and thick muscular legs. She has a heart-shaped face with a long, hooked nose and a wide smile. Her heritage is Turkish. She speaks Arabic, English, and Turkish; she is learning Esperanto. She is 17 when she joins Kraken. A diligent worker, Pumps applies herself well in academics and in physical training. She has a special fondness for physics, as it helps her accomplish more with her superpowers. As a tomboy, she gets along well with boys and men. Her girl skills are those of a tween, and she has made no effort to advance them, leaving her years behind her peers.
Origin: As a tween, Funda followed her very feminine best friend, trying on fashionable shoes and clothes, which is where she originally got the nickname "Pumps." After her friend died in a car crash, Funda was despondent. Her uncle suggested that physical activity might help, so she threw herself into that and found it a much better fit for her personality, abandoning feminine things. After she developed Super-Strength, her family relationships became strained, and the government began to take an unhealthy interest. Kraken agents helped smuggle her out of the country, and she stuck with them.

He is tall and lanky, with high cheekbones and a long pointed chin. His heritage includes American, Japanese, Norse, and Shawnee. He speaks English and Japanese; he is learning Esperanto. Born in Columbus, Ohio, he is 17 when he tentatively joins Kraken. Slither has been in and out of foster care, group homes, gangs, and the street for over a decade and views them all approximately the same. He is an accomplished thief and brawler. Fast and tough, he does well in fights and has no trouble intimidating people. After falling in with Kraken and discovering it a much more reliable source of survival needs, he is trying to learn how to work with other people but is rather bad at it so far.
Origin: Frustrated foster parents kept trying to buzz his hair short instead of actually taking care of it. The older Craig got, the harder he fought, sometimes hitting people and other times just running away. When he was 13, the last bout ended in a bloody battle that left his scalp cut in many places. The next day, the hair had all grown back down to his shoulders -- and could no longer be cut. Frightened by the sudden manifestation, his foster parents fobbed him off on Family Services, who put him in a group home. Craig ran away before dawn, and nobody has had much luck holding onto him since.
Uniform: Off duty, he wears rough-and-ready boy clothes, often in shades of black, gray, and blue. Much of that is denim and jersey, with some flannel in cooler weather.

Jiho (Choi Yo-han) -- He has pale skin and a long oval face. His right eye is red and his left eye is cobalt blue. His short hair used to be dark, but is now pink with lavender streaks on the right and blue with lavender streaks on the left. He is slender and graceful. His heritage is North Korean. He speaks English, Mandarin Chinese, and Munhwaŏ (North Korean); he is studying Esperanto. Jiho is 15 at the time of the team fair. His equanimity and emotional intelligence make him good at teamwork.
Origin: Jiho suspects government experiments. His parents always worried about him and about the government taking him away. One day that happened. Jiho thinks his parents are probably dead, but doesn't know for sure. He was shuttled around to different facilities, and then Kraken rescued him.

He speaks English, and studies Spanish in school although he's not particularly good at it. He is 13 at the time of the team fair. Dauber enjoys sports and has an athletic body. He has trouble sitting still, though. Spontaneous and easygoing, he excels at thinking outside the box. Dauber is genderfluid and likes exploring his identity, including his superpowers. He would like to join a team, but has grown more wary of people after his experiences.
Origin: When Sam was 12, a pileup on the highway trapped him in a burning car, and he melted to flow out of it. After that, though, everyone rejected him, so he ran away. Kraken picked him up off the streets.

Amahle (René Cilliërs) -- Ey has café-au-lait skin and brown eyes. Eir nappy hair is buzzed short and tinted different colors with Illusion. Ey is slim and androgynous with little body definition, which makes for a flexible physique. Amahle has four piercings in each ear and one in each nostril. Ey identifies as agender. Ey is 16 years old at the time of the team fair. Amahle comes from Durban, South Africa. Ey speaks Afrikaans, French, Italian, South African English, Portuguese, Xhosa, and Zulu. Ey is studying Esperanto. Eir father is a Francophone scholar who sidelines as a translator in a mixed neighborhood, and Amahle has earned pocket money the same way. Ey likes people and excels at cooperation. However, ey has little grasp of music and less interest in the booming drums so characteristic of African music, which didn't go over well there.
Origin: René was helping eir father to decipher some old notebooks, and then developed superpowers. Unfortunately nefarious people found out, and René had to be smuggled out to avoid being carved up for magical ingredients. Ey was terrified of this possibility due to the 2008 Kei Ripper Killings in Butterworth, only 240 miles (387 kilometers) away, the last of which destroyed most of that town.
Uniform: René wears mostly unisex clothes with some feminine or masculine pieces. Ey favors ivory, tan, brown, and black as neutrals plus pastel accents.

Murder for body parts is a grisly practice in several parts of the world. In Africa, muti murders especially target people believed to have extra power, such as albinos. In Terramagne, this belief extends to people with superpowers, creating extremely dangerous circumstances not only for soups but everyone around them, because some have reflexive defenses. Some victims survive, and a few of these manifest superpowers -- or if already super, gain new abilities.
Monday, November 10, 2008 -- The Kei Ripper Killings in the vicinity of Butterworth, South Africa came to an abrupt end when a victim exploded. The resultant crater (with a radius of 3542.85 meters or about 2.2 miles) took out the entirety of the village eBika -- now a shallow bowl of glassy rock -- where the attack happened, along with northeastern parts of Mchubazaki and Butterworth. The initial blast seemed to gain power, allowing it to expand farther, although it eventually petered out. African theorists speculate that it may have drawn on life force or soul energy, which dissipated as the first to die fully departed the mortal plane. SPOON considers this theory ridiculous, but has not proposed an alternative explanation for why the blast petered out instead of continuing to grow.
The death toll was estimated around 10,500 people but was impossible to determine due to the widespread devastation. The zone of major destruction and injury (with a radius of 5785.93 meters or about 3.6 miles) added most of the village of Zazulwana. About 13,000 people suffered serious injuries, about half of whom died, many from lack of care. The zone of minor destruction and injury (with a radius of 7892.18 meters or 4.9 miles) encompassed the entirety of the village Qora and a small part of northeastern eMzantsi. Another 8,000 or so reported minor injuries. The number of injuries is likely underestimated due to overwhelmed caregivers ignoring minor ones in favor of major ones and some occurring in outlying areas without much access to aid.
What little is left of Butterworth has gone from a small city to a minor town, but it remains a local center of activity because its Umnquma Hospital was fortunately just outside the blast radius and received many upgrades from foreign aid in the aftermath of the incident. It is not known whether the victim survived the explosion. The cause was known because one intended assailant had second thoughts and reported the plans to the Butterworth police, but too late to stop the attack; he died of severe injuries, along with most of the police, when the station collapsed.

This is in order to give [these crumbs] to Nukva, and the crumbs spread throughout Nukva in a manner similar to [how the coins of] tzedaka [a person distributes spread salvation throughout the world].

Coll McCauley -- He has pale skin, blue eyes, and red hair. His heritage is American and Irish; he speaks English. He is 17 years old at the time of the team fair in 2015. Coll loves the wilderness and had a great time in Activity Scouts. He dislikes cities, though, and doesn't fare as well there. Energetic and friendly, he gets along with most people.
Origin: He got stranded in the wilderness with his Activity Scout troop, and they were running out of firewood. He willed the flames to keep burning, and they did, long enough for help to arrive. After that, though, his stepfather said he was "unnatural" and began beating him. Afraid of losing control, he ran away from home. Crashing at a Triton Teen Center put him in touch with Kraken.

Origin: Shortly after enlisting in the army, he put a firecracker in his fly and lit it. He gained superpowers, but could only direct them from his crotch, not his hands like most people. Unwilling to endure the scandal that would ensue if it became public, the Army gave him an "other than honorable" discharge. Frustrated by his situation, he took up petty theft, and came into contact with Kraken -- a comfortable fit given its military roots.

Nut Cannon: This is the first of our funny choices, and we wanted to start things off with a laugh, this is one of the more comic terms we've heard.
Altha Layton -- She has fair skin, brown eyes, and wavy shoulder-length hair of light brown. Her heritage is American; she speaks English. She is 16 years old at the time of the team fair in 2015. Practical and helpful, Altha cares more about getting things done than what people think. She used to make friends easily, but her experiences have made her more wary, and that makes her lonely.
Origin: In her freshman year of high school, her civic volunteer bus got caught in a massive pile-up. Altha knew plenty of first aid from Activity Scouts, and she had only minor injuries, so she started helping the people nearest to her. But the mass-casualty incident meant that there weren't nearly enough caregivers compared to the number of injuries. She worked faster and faster under pressure, willing the victims to survive, until she felt herself break through some kind of threshold. After that, everything seemed to slow down like she had all the time in the world. She finished treating everyone she could, and then faceplanted from exhaustion. Everyone Altha treated survived, but there was no way to hide what she had done. Not long after that, she was kidnapped and sold to a warlord who wanted her to keep his soldiers alive. She refused, so they beat her and locked her in a cell. Then Kraken rescued her and a number of other enslaved soups.
