"The One That People Come to with Questions"
When Crina was twelve,
the other girls were learning
things they'd need to know
as wives and mothers and
keepers of the household.
Crina was learning how
to read Greek and write
Her friends thought
that was weird, but they
envied the way her recipes
always came out right and
her patterns were cut perfectly.
"They could do it too," she said
to Victor, "if they'd just pay attention."
"Well, that's true," Victor said. "Perhaps
they simply need someone to show
them why those skills are relevant
to lives they'll lead, not just scholars."
"Mmm," said Crina. "There is
quite a lot of chemistry in cooking
and geometry in sewing. The girls
do ask me about those parts."
"It's come to my attention
that you have become the one
that people come to with questions,"
Victor said, looking at Crina. "You
should lead a class on the topic."
"How did I wind up in charge?"
Crina said, shaking her head.
"You're the teacher!"
"I'm the teacher, but
you are growing into
a wise young lady,"
Victor said. "Try it out.
You might find that you
like teaching school."
So Crina tried it.
She found out that
she did not like teaching
all that much, but she
loved being in charge.
