You can make pretty much any cultured milk product -- cheese, sour cream, etc. -- by culturing a milk substitute. Also worth mentioning, chia pudding has a very similar comparison to some types of yogurt, although it's closest to tapioca pudding. Stir chia into any delicious liquid and it'll thicken up in a few hours.

You will probably need to experiment with different base ingredients to find out which you prefer for what purpose. By all means try the storebought versions, but read the labels because those are often loaded with sugar and artificial ingredients. Many people wind up making their own because they dislike the storebought offerings. Your best bet is to connect with people in your area who enjoy making cultured foods.
