Building on Faults

Humans have built cities on a lot of wildly unsuitable sites.  But Machu Picchu is built on faults because of the unique benefits that created.  I think it's the first time I've seen practical benefits to building in such a dangerous place, based on its physics rather than external factors such as trade routes.  Fascinating.
