Poem: "Of a Mingled Yarn"

This poem came out of the September 3, 2019 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by prompts from [personal profile] pantha and Jay. It fills the "huath (terrible-colored)" square in my 9-1-19 card for the Arts and Crafts Festival bingo. This poem has been sponsored by Anthony & Shirley Barrette. It belongs to the Shiv thread of the Polychrome Heroics series.

Warning: Yarn lust! These yarns actually exist, and some of them are expensive. Not qiviut expensive, but hand-dyed pure wool expensive.

"Of a Mingled Yarn"

[Monday, September 28, 2015]

"Does Halley like scarves?"
Shiv held the phone awkwardly
between ear and shoulder,
his hands full of yarn.

"Yes, why?" said Dr. G.

"Cause I'm standing in Yarn Over
and I was looking for variegated yarn
to make myself a scarf and I found glas.
Then while I was looking for more colors
to match that, I saw huath, and that one is
Halley's favorite color, right?" Shiv said.

"That's right," said Dr. G. "What
did you have in mind, Hugo?"

"I thought, you know, for
Christmas?" Shiv said.

"I'm sure Halley would love
a hand-made Christmas gift
from you," said Dr. G. "A scarf is
ideal because it can't be outgrown."

That thought had been in the back
of Shiv's mind too, because
kids grew like weeds.

Then Shiv started
second-guessing himself.

"I dunno, maybe this was
a dumb idea," he said. "Halley
and I don't get along. Would
thon even want a reminder of me?"

Dr. G chuckled. "It's up to you what,
if anything, to give Halley for Christmas,"
he said. "I'll just leave you with a quote
from Shakespeare: The web of our life is
of a mingled yarn, good and ill together."

"That ... sounds like the story of my life,"
Shiv admitted. "Especially like
me and Halley together."

"I'm glad I could help,
Dr. G said warmly.

"Yeah, thanks," Shiv said.
"I'll see what else I can
find to match this."

His hands were
shaking a little, so he
got a couple of baskets
from the stack on the counter.

It was easy enough to pile up
those yarns he wanted for his own:
glas, pervenche, labrador, nattier, zaffre --
all different shades of cool, misty colors.

For Halley he chose mostly warm shades:
huath, eburnean, glaucous, usgdha, wenge.
Some of the individual skeins were butt-ugly,
yet together they looked pretty good.

Then Shiv went looking for textured yarn,
picking out a blue one with glittery bits
for himself and an autumn mix for Halley.

Each set was a riot of colors, some
barely variegated and others
tonal or self-striping.

Halley's might even
match the hat that Shiv
had made earlier from
burgundy-and-white yarn.

Shiv was debating
what scarf pattern to use
when he spotted the sample
slung around a mannequin.

It was done in a dozen shades
of red and pink, with tassels
all down one of its long edges,
turning into a scarf-wrap-thing.

Below the display lay a folder
labeled Free Pattern, so
Shiv took one of those.

He would probably just
fringe the short ends
of his own scarf, but he
thought Halley would like
the wider band of fringe.

This was going to be so fun.

Notes:

"The web of our life is of a mingled yarn, good and ill together."
-- William Shakespeare

Yarn Over is a T-American shop with materials for knitting, crochet, and other fibercrafts. This wall has tools and supplies. Shelves and baskets hold more yarn. These big skeins are long-striping yarn. A work table provides space for crafting.

Scarves make popular gifts.

Variegated yarn has more than one color in various patterns. One type is self-striping yarn with long enough stretches of each color to create distinct stripes.

The uncommon colors came from the color list in the Arts and Crafts Festival.

Shiv's Scarf
glas (blue-green-grey)
labrador (blue-gray)
nattier (slate-blue)
pervenche (periwinkle)
zaffre (sapphire blue)
plus blue textured yarn

Halley's Scarf
eburnean (ivory)
glaucous (blue-gray)
huath (terrible-colored)
usgdha (resinous)
wenge (copper-brown)
plus autumn textured yarn

Here is the whole list of the Color Ogham that contributed several words:

Dathogam / Colour-ogam
bán 'white'
liath 'grey'
flann 'red'
sodath 'fine-coloured'
necht 'clear'
huath 'terrible'
dub 'black'
temen 'dark grey'
cron 'brown'
quiar 'mouse-coloured',
mbracht 'variegated'
gorm 'blue'
nglas 'green'
sorcha 'bright'
ruadh 'red'
alad 'piebald'
odhar 'dun'
usgdha 'resinous'
erc 'red'
irfind 'very white'

Huath has been described as a shade of brown, purple, or various other colors. It only makes sense if you know the original application: the color of ominous things like severe bruises and deadly storms, which tend to be a blend of ugly colors. But this is Halley's favorite color.

Usgdha literally means the color of resin, which is tree sap. That can mean anything from palest yellow to brown-black and rarely a yellowish-green. Most of the time it means the amber range of dark yellow through orange.

Glas is a quintessentially Celtic term that can mean blue, green, gray, or silver -- or any combination of those colors. It has mixed connotations of something beautiful but changeable and potentially perilous. This makes a lot more sense if you know that it actually means "sea-colored." The closest English translation is "hazel."

I took most of these yarns from Nanette Wake Studio. Note that the artist also makes glorious, brilliant colors in addition to the mostly craptastic colors that Halley likes.

Shiv chooses these yarns, mostly cool colors, to make a scarf for himself.  I would enjoy wearing a scarf like this.

Nattier Blue-Gray
This blue-gray yarn is nearly solid, but if you look closely you can see subtle variegations. It's a feature (not a bug) of natural, untreated wool. To make wool take dye perfectly smooth, you usually have to use chemicals on it first. So you see that trait in many artisan yarns. Capitalize on it by choosing a pattern compatible with subtle color shifts.

Blue Texture Yarn
The main body of this yarn is made of medium-light and medium-dark blue, with a sparkly black binder thread, plus tufts of pink, green, yellow, and white. It provides a lot of variation in thickness and texture as well as color, contrasting with the much smoother hand-dyed woolen yarns above.

Shiv chooses these yarns, mostly warm colors, to make a scarf for Halley.  This is not at all the spectrum I wear, and would not look good on me, although my mother might like it.  But my color-sense tells me that these colors would combine well for the subset of people who enjoy clashing warm-cool earth tones: the target audience of these yarns.

Textured art yarn bundle 11 x 3 yd 33yd AUTUMN $7.96

Dimensions
Length: 3 Yards; Yarn weight: 5 Bulky
Materials
Primary fiber: Polyamide
Secondary fiber: Wool
This art yarn bundle is composed of 11 different luxury fibers, each 3 yard in length.

You can use these bundles in many projects, weaving, dream catchers, dreadlocks, jewellery making, gift wrapping, felting, collages, scrapbooking, flower projects, hat making, spinning and knitting textural or anywhere your imagination takes you. You are only limited by your imagination.

Autumn Texture
This yarn is a riot of contrasting colors and textures. Part of it is thin ivory string with big caterpillars spaced along it. Part is red ribbon. Part is frizzy melon-orange stuff of varying thickness. There is some black eyelash yarn. In one place there is red thread twisted along gray yarn. There are bits of red, orange, yellow, ivory, brown, gray, blue, and green. It looks like a giant pain in the ass to knit, but it is spectacular stuff.

This is the sample scarf-wrap that Shiv saw and took a pattern for making. It was intended as a box-bottom project to use up leftovers of many styles. These patterns usually work if you have at least 5-6 different yarns, especially if you include at least one dramatically different in color and/or texture for contrast. Shiv has done both in each of his yarn batches for the two separate scarves.

Scrap Wrap

MATERIALS:
Size US 15, 17 or 19 knitting needles (depending on how loose you want your fabric)
Get out your stash and use all your half-knitted balls of yarn that aren't big enough to make anything else with, use at least 10-15 different yarns
Finished size: 4" tall (10" with fringe), 100" long or desired length

DIRECTIONS:
CO 15 sts
Row 1: knit
Row 2: yo, k to within last 2 sts, k2tog
Repeat these 2 rows, creating diagonal stripes. Randomly reach into your bag and pull out a new yarn every few rows. Make individual stripes, mix 2-3 yarns together, or alternate for a random look. To make this scarf into a fabulous wrap, fringe the length of the entire thing rather than just the ends. Wrap yarn around a DVD case and cut to make fringe a uniform size.

Back in "The Quickest Way to Know a Woman," Shiv bought this yarn that reminded him of Halley without any particular plan for it. Later he added more yarn and made it into a burgundy hat with gray fingerless mitts, neckwarmer, and hat. You can see how Shiv's perspective of Halley has shifted over time from tolerant to hostile to contemplative to tentatively positive.

More People Love You than You Will Ever Know on Basic Sock Price $32.00
"More People Love You than You will Ever Know" (burgundy)
Part of The Struggle and Strength Line - Fall 2018
As some of you may know I have been struggling with Anxiety and mild Depression and after many years I have finally decided to get help. Now with the help of my doctor, my therapist, family and friends I am ready to be my best self.
I dyed the Fall 2018 line of new colourways with my mental health in mind in the hopes that it will help others like me stop the stigma around mental health. The colours were each created from a bright colour mixed with a dark colour to achieve the deep, moody look. I left a short undyed section in each skein that will knit up as a few white stitches amongst the main colour.
The short bursts of white in each skein is representative of your heart, your center. What makes you tick, what make you YOU. Your spark, your strength. It's glowing within you.

Basic Sock:
80% Superwash Merino wool, 20% nylon
~420 yards
Fingering Weight
3-ply yarn
115 grams

Although superwash wool is machine washable, for best results I recommend handwash cool, dry flat.

The cost is for one skein though multiples may be available - please select your quantity from the drop-down menu.

Burgundy and White
This yarn is burgundy with crisp white sections. It reminds Shiv of Halley because it resembles the maybe-colors that thon likes to wear. But he has no active plans to make anything of it.
