Poem: "Sobremesa"
This is the linkback perk poem for the July 2, 2019 Poetry Fishbowl. It was originally hosted by Dreamwidth user Dialecticdreamer. It fills a square in my 12-31-18 card for the Untranslatable Words Bingo fest:
Sobremesa (Spanish): After-lunch conversation around the table
This poem belongs to the series LIFC.
Betty had gone with
Phil and Tony because
they had offered her a way
to escape from her father, and
beggars couldn't be choosers.
They had offered her a chance
to see Bruce-and-Hulk again, which
unto itself was reason enough
to visit Avengers Tower.
It wasn't any of those things
that convinced her to stay, though:
it was the sense of community.
It was flopping on the floor
to watch old movies while eating
bowls of pizza-flavored popcorn.
It was the after-lunch conversations
about gamma radiation, strategy,
thermonuclear astrophysics, cooking,
molecular biochemistry, martial arts, and
the timeline of Saturday morning cartoons.
It was knowing she could be herself
without having to hide either her wits
or her femininity, and knowing that she
could find a match for any and all of it,
that made Betty want to stay here with
these weird and wonderful people.
