Poem: "The Lone Tree"

This is the freebie for the July [community profile] crowdfunding Creative Jam. It was inspired by a prompt from [personal profile] readera. It also fills the "day at the beach" square in my 4-7-18 card for the Origfic Bingo fest.

"The Lone Tree"

On Lake Wanaka, the beach
is soft sand and mud sprinkled
with smooth pebbles, framing
the mirror of blue water.

Just off the shore,
on a little rise of land,
there stands a tree.

The water flows
all around its trunk,
and the leaves dip down
to wet themselves in the waves.

The tree is alone but not lonely.

There are other trees across the lake,
climbing up the mountains, and
behind where the beach runs out.

But there is only one tree
standing in the lake itself,

alone.

Perhaps it has
some special adaptation
that allows it to survive
standing in water where
no other tree could survive.

Perhaps it is an outgrowth
of Lake Wanaka itself.

Perhaps it simply
prefers its own company.

It is the Lone Tree.

It stands where it stands, and
it does not owe anyone an answer.
