Poem: "Dignity, Respect, and Absolute Care"

This poem came out of the July 2, 2019 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired and sponsored by Shirley Barrette. It also fills the "Blankets" square in my 7-1-19 card for the Winterfest in July Bingo.

Warning: contains misbehaving medics.

"Dignity, Respect, and Absolute Care"

In order for healing
to happen, it
requires respect.

If the nurses in
the hospital don't
listen to the patients,
then they make things
worse instead of better.

If they bring only blankets
but not compassion,
it doesn't help.

If they give orders
instead of advice, then
they forget their place,
trampling on agency
and body autonomy.

You need respect
to recover from
life's calamities.

You need to listen
to your body, too,
and what it requires.

You find when you pursue
a life of greater health and
happiness, you then treat
the body you have with dignity,
respect, and absolute care.
