Saturday Yardening

Today is cool, gray, and rainy.  It rained for a good part of yesterday and last night, intermittent drizzly rain. \o/  While not all the cracks in the ground have closed yet, they are smaller, and the soil is soft again.

Round One, I fed birds.  Then I started digging a big hole for the tricolor beech tree that's been sitting on the porch for weeks because the ground was bricked.

EDIT 6/15/19: Round Two, I deepened the hole.

We got more rain between rounds 2 and 3 today.  :D

EDIT 6/15/19: Round Three, I planted the tricolor beech tree in the hold.  I feel super accomplished now, even though I still have other things to do.  That was the biggest part of this project.  I rarely make the giant hole recommended, because it's too much work and I'm usually planting seedlings anyway, but this is a fancy specimen tree that's already a little taller than I am.  It gets the premium treatment.  ;)

EDIT 6/15/19: Round Four, I wrapped the tricolor beech tree. Then I put groundcloth down and covered it with mulch.  I also put out more grass and clover seed on bare spots.

The fireflies are finally out in force. It's been too cool and/or dry for them until now.  We've seen a few stragglers but not a lot.  Tonight there are more.  :D

The rain has left puddles in the fields.  Toads are out in them singing love songs.  It's a beautiful summer night all around.

My yardening sessions typically run 15-30 minutes.  If I do three, that's 45-90 minutes in a day.  On a busy day, I might do five, or 1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes.  Occasionally I've managed six rounds, but those are usually shorter ones.  Most days I'm probably getting 1-2 hours of yardening done.
