Ultra-processed Foods

... raise the risk of cardiovascular disease and death. The more of it people eat, the worse the effects get. So to maximize health, eat as many whole unprocessed foods as you can. When choosing processed foods, try to avoid harmful additives and prefer less-processed over more-processed things (e.g. whole-grain bread rather than white bread). Minimize or eliminate use of ultra-processed foods.

Here are some tips on how to minimize processed foods. I was particularly amused by this one, which is new to me:

Lastly, to once again quote Michael Pollan, he says to “eat all the junk food you want as long as you cook it yourself.” If you had to peel, chop and deep fry potatoes every time you wanted French fries then you might not eat them very often. Only eating “junk food” such as cakes, sweets, and fried foods as often as you are willing to make them yourself will automatically ensure the frequency is appropriate.

I have to admit that I'm really enjoying this year's goal of making at least one new recipe a month.  We have made one dessert, the spiced root cake, which we liked well enough to make again -- on a special occasion, because yeah, it's a lot of work.  Mostly we're choosing main dishes or side dishes.  A majority are made from scratch, so this is increasing our consumption of real food rather than convenience foods.
