Character notes for "The Hobo King"

Here are the character notes for "The Hobo King."

Camo Dan (Daniel Patton) -- He has fair skin, blue eyes, and short curly brown hair. He is short and slender. Camo Dan is an army veteran who couldn't settle down after returning to civilian life, so he became a hobo. He travels by hopping trains to look for work. He has Prolonged Duress Stress Disorder from combat. A quirk of his PDSD is that his worst war experiences all happened when he was stationed at the same place for a long time. As long as he's moving, he feels relatively safe and his symptoms are minor. He can usually make it about three months before he gets uncomfortable. But the longer he stays in the same place, the worse it gets; he always gives up and moves on around the six-month mark.
Qualities: Expert (+4) Hobo, Good (+2) Army Veteran, Good (+2) Helpful, Good (+2) Work Ethic
Poor (-2) PDSD

See the bits of camouflage paint on the boxcar? A few railroad companies, and some military trains, use that to mark a "camo car" as veteran-friendly. A lot of hobos are veterans, and some people support them.

Dustrider (Holt Overstreet) -- He has tinted skin, brown eyes, and brown hair buzzed short. He is strong and fast. Originally from Auburn, Kansas, Dustrider now works for the SPOON base in the Heights. He has a bad habit of discriminating against people based on a quick glance. He gets along well with other blue-collar men, though. Strong and fast, he enjoys team sports.
Origin: As a teen, he was working in a field when he got caught in a dust storm and manged to teleport to safety, bringing his team with him.
Uniform: Blue-collar men's wear.
Qualities: Good (+2) Fast, Good (+2) Guy Friends, Good (+2) Strength, Good (+2) Team Sports, Good (+2) Visual-Spatial Intelligence
Poor (-2) Prejudiced
Powers: Good (+2) Teleportation
Poor (-2) Prejudiced
Motivation: Get the job done.

Viridian (Vada Stungis) -- She has porcelain skin and black eyes with a faint peacock sheen. Her short hair was originally black but now has a sheen of deep green with hints of blue and purple. Her parents paid for her engineering degree, which she does like but views more as a hobby. Vada spends more time teleporting people or modeling for artists and photographers, and she is one of the most-depicted soups as a result. Although she can spend months on an engineering project, she has little patience for people who aren't as smart as she is, and she doesn't always think to put the bottom rungs on the ladder. She is a friend of Junket.
Origin: At her college, an experiment in Super-Gizmology got out of hand and caused an explosion. A number of students caught in the blast developed Teleporting or Super-Speed, with Viridian getting the former. They all share the distinctive peacock-colored hair.
Uniform: Fashionable women's wear, although she models in the nude as well as clothed.
Qualities: Good (+2) Bold, Good (+2) Engineer, Good (+2) Fine Arts Model, Good (+2) Persuasive, Good (+2) Precise
Poor (-2) Impatient with Less-Smart People
Powers: Good (+2) Teleportation
Viridian also owns a hobo nickel charmed for safe travel. It grants a Good (+2) Upshift on all rolls relating to travel. That effectively gives her Expert (+4) Teleportation as long as she carries it, which she always does.
Motivation: To do things the right way.

Bedroll Ben (Benjamin Jelte) -- He has fair skin, brown eyes, and short ash-brown hair. His mustache is going gray. He is tall and sturdy. Born in Cedar City, Utah, Bedroll Ben is now a hobo who frequents the mountain states of Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico. Occasionally he travels farther afield if the work is good. He has a particular knack for packing and camping, and volunteers to roll other people's bedrolls because he does it better. He can whittle too. However, Bedroll Ben can barely read and tries to avoid circumstances where he might have to.
Qualities: Good (+2) Big and Tall, Good (+2) Hobo, Good (+2) Visual-Spatial Intelligence, Good (+2) Whittling, Good (+2) Wilderness Skills
Poor (-2) Reading

Hollie the Hood (Hollie Bellis) -- She has fair skin, brown eyes, and long wavy brown hair. She is tough and sturdy. Born in Fish Haven, Idaho, Hollie the Hood is a hobo who typically travels the northern states of Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Sometimes she travels farther afield if the work is good. Streetwise in many ways, Hollie thrives in urban environments, easily scrounging what she needs to survive. She flounders in the wilderness, though.
Qualities: Good (+2) Hobo, Good (+2) Listener, Good (+2) Scrounge, Good (+2) Tough, Good (+2) Streetwise
Poor (-2) Wilderness Skills

Appalachian Kane (Kane Minard) -- He has sorrel skin, brown eyes, and nappy black hair worn in natural tufts plus a mustache and beard. He frequents the states of Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York. Occasionally he travels farther afield if the work is good. He was born in Meriden, West Virginia. Appalachian Kane excels in the wilderness but struggles to get by in urban environments. He often travels by foot, and his endurance lets him hike a long way each day. He enjoys black culture but has no trouble getting along in a mixed group. He loved Sankofa Club growing up.
Qualities: Good (+2) Black Culture, Good (+2) Endurance, Good (+2) Hobo, Good (+2) Naturalistic Intelligence, Good (+2) Wilderness Skills
Poor (-2) Urban Skills

Half-Pint (Carly Piddington) -- She has fair skin, brown eyes, and shoulder-length brown hair. She is 12 years old but looks more like 9. She is the daughter of Penny the Pint. They have been hobos ever since Penny ran away from an abusive boyfriend while pregnant. Half-Pint has Fetal Alcohol Syndrome manifesting as small size, low body weight, hyperactive behavior, and difficulty in school. She does much better learning from other people, though, so Penny basically homeschools her. Among other hobos, Half-Pint often serves as a page, carrying messages or fetching things. She can usually outrun even the taller kids.
Qualities: Good (+2) Fast, Good (+2) Interpersonal Intelligence
Poor (-2) Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

Penny the Pint (Penny Piddington) -- She has fair skin, brown eyes, and short dark brown hair. On her left shoulder she has a tattoo of a crescent moon, peace symbol, and tree. Penny the Pint was born in East Council Bluffs, Iowa. She is the mother of one daughter, Half-Pint (Carly Piddington). They have been hobos ever since Penny ran away from an abusive boyfriend while pregnant. They don't have a specific range, but travel all over America. Penny struggles with alcoholism. Most of the time, she manages to stay sober, but occasionally falls off the wagon. Her thriving sense of adventure makes life exciting.
Origin: Uncertain, but Penny suspects that it was something she drank.
Uniform: Bohemian women's clothes, but they have to be practical for travel.
Qualities: Good (+2) Carver, Good (+2) Hobo, Good (+2) Kinesthetic Intelligence, Good (+2) Mother, Good (+2) Venturous
Poor (+2) Alcoholism
Powers: Good (+2) Charmed Carvings
Penny can make carvings of wood or metal and imbue them with energy for good luck, companionship, safe travel, and so on. She trades these to people in exchange for goods or services.
Motivation: To take care of her daughter.

Wooden nickels - Carved wooden nickels was a common hobby among hoboes. Some of them were quite skilled at it and carried elaborate sets of carving tools with them, including tiny chisels, files, and clamps. They would trade these nickels for food, money, or a night's shelter. A few hoboes know the trick of imbuing these nickels with minor charms - luck, companionship, good traveling, etc. But the charm will only work for someone who accepts the nickel in fair trade, without knowing that it's magical. In 1913, a new 5 cent coin was minted, the “Buffalo Nickel:.” It featured the profile of a large Native American's head on the front, and a buffalo on the reverse. Because the designs on this coin had such large figures on both sides, it allowed the hoboes a great deal of creative latitude. And did they ever take advantage of it! The Indians' head was transformed into soldiers, clowns, ladies and even past president's. The most popular subject was an ethnic person, usually wearing a derby and sporting a beard. These are referred to as “Hobo Nickels.”

Dean the Beans (Dean Laramie) -- He has fair skin, brown eyes, and short gray hair with a mustache and beard. He is tall and chunky. He wears glasses. Originally from Cheyenne, Wyoming, Dean the Beans is now a hobo who travels mostly in the Rocky Mountain states of Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. He learned to cook as a teenager and often goes from one bread line to another, making or serving food. He uses his senses of smell and taste much more than most humans do, so most people think he's weird.
Qualities: Good (+2) Constitution, Good (+2) Hobo, Good (+2) Nurturing, Good (+2) Smell/Taste Dominant, Good (+2) Trail Cook
Poor (-2) Fitting In

Papa Wheelie (Edgar Wingfield) -- He has tinted skin, grown eyes, and long straight hair of pale gray. His mustache and beard have gone completely white. He uses a wheelchair due to an old war injury that left his legs paralyzed. As an American nomad, he travels all over the country. Many people look up to Papa Wheelie, and he doesn't mind being an elder or a mentor -- but he refuses to take on any kind of leadership role. He had enough of that in the marines, and it's not a good memory.
Qualities: Master (+6) American Nomad, Expert (+4) Citizenship, Expert (+4) Wisdom, Good (+2) Constitution, Good (+2) Kinesthetic Intelligence, Good (+2) Marine Veteran
Poor (-2) Averse to Leadership
