32. What was the first thing you bought with your own money?
I have no idea. My parents let me have spending money early enough that I don't remember a first time. Statistically speaking, though, it was probably a book. That was one of the first things I made a beeline for in a store or on gift occasions.
I do have one very early memory of picking out little animal figures from a big box. My mother said, "You're spending all your money." What I was doing was pulling out all the ones that interested me, because there were a lot of duplicates. Then I looked at what I had and narrowed it down to the ones I wanted to buy. I probably wasn't even school age then. I still use that as one of several shopping patterns. Sometimes I look for clusters of things that go together (e.g. clothes) and other times I look for things that are the most different (e.g. buying jelly I'll look for a red flavor and a yellow flavor).
