Green Groove

I found this site tonight. Green Groove has this list you can check off to plan a withdrawal from Earth-hostile practices. Parts of it made me laugh -- some because I already do them, some because they're utterly impractical for me. Let's see...

Auto
Adjust the Air Pressure In Your Car's Tires (I guess I could get someone to do this.)
Carpool One Day (Where? We're in the middle of nowhere, and only drive 2-3 days a week now.)
Ride Bike or Metro One Day (No bike. No metro. Nothing within range, either.)
Clean Air Filter in Car (We have it replaced periodically, when we can afford to.)
Drive Speed Limit One Day (Speeding on these roads is not safe. Especially after some loon on a snowplow sets his blade an inch too low and stands all the chunks in ever pothole on end.)

Diet
Limit Red Meat to Two-Three Times This Week (I think we have it more than that, but it's usually bits of meat in something, not a big hunk of meat.)
Do Not Purchase More Than Two-Three Plastic Bottled Beverages (Not gonna happen unless they reissue soda in glass. Partner's choice.)
Do Not Eat Out More Than Two-Three Times This Week (I doubt we eat out that often per month these days.)
Eat One Meal That Is 100% Grown Locally (*look outside at snowbanks* Maybe in a few months...)
Take Bag Lunch to Work at Least One Day (I work at home, so I guess I do this every day.)

Home
Replace One Old Lightbulb With a Compact Fluorescent (We're replacing all of them, since we discovered it takes longer for me to make them explode.)
Hang Dry At Least One Load of Laundry (Not gonna happen. I'm not sure I'd get a single item back intact, and I'm sure none would be clean!)
Reuse a Bathing Towel At Least Once (Eww. And we don't use the good towels on the floor, we have old towels for that.)
Unplug All Unused Appliances/Electronics (All of them, no, because some have programmed functions.)
Refrain From Using Any Artificial Light During the Day Once This Week (Only when the power goes off.)
Replace Printer Paper With Recycled Paper (When we can find it, I do this.)
Insulate Your Hot Water Heater (I think the one down there has its own internal insulation. We have it set on moderate heat anyhow.)
Acquire One Houseplant (The planter is full.)

Lifestyle
Wear An Article of Clothing at Least Twice Before Washing (Check! Laziness has its uses.)
Convince One Peer to Signup With Green Groove (I guess you'll have to let me know if this happens.)
Signup to Not Receive Junk Mail (I do this periodically.)
Change One Paper/Stamp Bill to Online Bill Pay (Not one of my household duties.)
Aquire or Make One Reusable Shopping Bag (Check! We're switching to reusable bags this year.)
Air Dry Your Hair Once This Week (if normally use hairdryer) (Never use one. Me + electricity + water = Darwin opportunity.)
Turn Off Your TV One Night This Week And Read a Book (*titter* I'm always reading. We use the TV for watching DVDs currently.)
Cut Down One Shower By At Least Five Minutes (Not gonna happen. I lather my hair 3 times to get it clean. Heck, I have to lather it once just to get it wet.)
Run Dishwasher On Cold For At Least One Load (It doesn't get the dishes clean. They're hand-washed, in hot water because cold is unsanitary & ineffective.)
Recycle All Aluminum Waste This Week (Check. We get money for this.)
Recycle All Glass Containers This Week (Possibly. We're trying to find a place that will take glass.)
Recycle All Plastic Containers This Week (Not possible; there's no local place that takes all types.)

It's amazing how green you can be when you don't have the money to squander on some Earth-hostile luxuries and you're too lazy to indulge in others. This is somewhat counterbalanced by not always being able to afford green products.
