Review: "Beowulf" movie

We went to see the move "Beowulf" tonight. It turned out better than I expected, and after seeing the trailers I had rather high hopes for it. A surprising amount of facial expression, body language, and general acting came through the computer animation; they did a fine job of motion-capture. I was greatly entertained with the ancient Danish flavor of the movie overall. For fans of the original -- if you listen closely, you can catch actual lines and phrases in translation, and in a few places, snippets of the original language. Beowulf really had that aura that heroes have, that sense of presence and ability to achieve great feats by virtue of being a hero. And the dragon was magnificent.

Sure, there were places where the technology still fell short of verisimilitude; but on the whole it worked. No, it's not an exact screening of the original tale, but it's not intended to be that; and it's a very entertaining modern rendition. If you like heroic adventure or historic literature, "Beowulf" is well worth watching. As for me, well ...

I came home and had to write a page and a half of alliterative verse to get the mood out of my head. I was that reminded of what it's like to live in a time of heroes.
