Duilio Suarez -- He has tinted skin, black eyes, and coffee-brown hair cut short. He is tall with a rectangular face. His heritage is Hispanic; he speaks English and Spanish. Duilio works as a nurse at the hospital in Mercedes, California. His intelligence and confidence make him seem a lot better at it than he actually is. His strength is an asset too. But his bedside manner is terrible.
Qualities: Good (+2) Confident, Good (+2) Logical-Mathematical Intelligence, Good (+2) Strength
Poor (-2) Nurse
Æbbe Blythewood -- She has pale skin with freckles, violet eyes, and long wavy black hair. She is 4'10" tall, slender and graceful. Æbbe comes from a traditional service family in Britain, but her heritage is actually Pictish. She is a cousin of Pips. They belong to the Caerini clan, whose name refers both to sheep and goats. They are practical, sure-footed, stealthy, clever, and capable of seeming harmless while they wreak all manner of havoc. They're also on the isolationist side, and they speak Pictish only among other Picts. Æbbe is much admired among her people. She speaks English, Latin, Old Irish, Old Norse, and Pictish. She is studying geology at university. She understands both the natural world and the numinous world. Both her abilities and her studies incline her to spend some time in the wilderness, so she usually takes the weekend off to go camping.
Æbbe also plays bodhran for a band, Z-Rod, that performs folk music and dances. They have two bodhran players and three pennywhistle players. The bodhran players are also the vocalists. The pennywhistle players are the best boomstick players, although the bodhran players join in for more complex routines. The performances draw on ancient traditions of Morris dancing, with modern boomsticks providing a more musical tone as they replace the antlers, wooden staves, or swords used in old Morris moves.
Origin: Æbbe was born with some sensitivity to energy, but it took time and practice for her to learn what she could do with it. At puberty, she gained the ability to manipulate the energy somewhat. Her ability is still growing in, and her power is rising faster than her control.
Qualities: Good (+2) Existential Intelligence, Good (+2) Geology Major, Good (+2) Folk Performer, Good (+2) Graceful, Good (+2) Naturalistic Intelligence
Poor (-2)
Powers: Good (+2) Ley Witch
She can sense ley lines, draw energy from them or feed it into them, and tell if something is wrong with the flow.
Limitation: Æbbe is continually grounding. She can only keep her personal energy balanced while in contact with the ground. If given warning before breaking contact, she can concentrate on staying grounded but can't maintain it for very long. If picked up by surprise, her energy reroutes through the person holding her, sometimes doing damage. If she trips and falls through the air, her energy flares around her, which is more disorienting than damaging.
Motivation: To balance the Earth.
Ley lines are energy paths that appear in history and entertainment. Nodes are places where the lines cross, creating a pool of energy, as at many sacred sites around the world. Some people can manipulate this type of energy.
The Z-rod is a Pictish symbol that may represent the solar cycle and the afterlife.
The so-called z-rod is found in combination with a serpent, a tomb/doorway, or a double-sun (double disk), all possibly symbols of the solar cycle and the afterlife:
Boomsticks or boomwhackers are hollow tubes tuned to sound a musical note when struck together. Enjoy videos for a simple demonstration, five ways to play boomsticks, and a Bach prelude. This video shows traditional Morris dancing with sticks.
Morris dancing is an ancient folk dance popular throughout much of the Britannian Empire.
The Picts are associated with pixies, and some people believe the two are related or even the same. However, the Picts themselves tend to consider "pixie" a racial slur. Pips has a real chip on his shoulder about this.
Nobody knows for sure what happened to the Picts in local-Earth, and even the knowledge of their tribes is patchy. Rome couldn't really get a handle on them even here, and less so in Terramagne. There, some of the Picts have survived as cohesive clans hidden within the larger Scottish society. In T-America, Pips belongs to the Caerini clan, whose name refers both to sheep and goats. They are practical, sure-footed, stealthy, clever, and capable of seeming harmless while they wreak all manner of havoc. Think of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. They're also on the isolationist side, and they speak Pictish only among other Picts. Unfortunately Pips doesn't get along very well with his relatives, due to his peculiar taste in bosses, so he's the black sheep of the family. Walden's people are the Selgovae, which can mean 'scout' or 'guide' as well as 'hunter' -- the translation is imprecise due to cultural differences. A closer parallel may be found in the braves of Native American tribes. They're on the interactive side, and they speak Pictish freely among wider audiences. If you look on this map, based on Ptolemy's map of British tribes, you can see why: the Selgovae are right next to Hadrian's Wall, exposed to many foreigners, while the Caerini are as far north as possible with only other Picts for neighbors.
Maurea Draves -- She has fair skin that tans easily, blue eyes, and long straight hair streaked in lighter and darker shades of blonde. She is left-handed. Tall and athletic, she excels at beach sports and put herself through college with a beach volleyball scholarship. She dislikes deserts, though, uncomfortable in the hot dry air. Maurea took a Psychology Major with Premed at University of California in Santa Cruz, CA. Currently Maurea works as a Trauma-Informed Care Nurse at the hospital in Mercedes, California. Her emotional intelligence and teamwork make her very popular. She also enjoys sharing her love of clean eating with interested listeners, and keeps a stock of pamphlets and recipes to hand out.

Dr. Guozhi Yang -- He has amber skin, almond-shaped black eyes, and short black hair going gray. He has a short mustache and anchor beard. He wears glasses with thick black rims. His heritage is Chinese; he speaks English, Greek, Hindi, Latin, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, and Tagalog. Guozhi attended the David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California-Los Angeles where he earned a Doctor of Medicine degree with a minor in Cognitive Science. He did his main internship with the UCLA Goldberg Migraine Program. He still writes regularly for the journal Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine. He earned a Doctor of Medicine in Alternative Medicines degree from the Indian Board of Alternative Medicines with a focus on Ayurveda, Herbalism, Massage, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. He continued with a Doctor of Philosophy in Alternative Medicines degree with the thesis "The Application of Alternative Medicine for Migraines Resistant to Conventional Therapies."
Dr. Yang works at the hospital in Mercedes, California. He is a neurologist with specialties in migraine care and alternative medicine, which dovetail nicely given that migraines and other pernicious headache conditions often refuse to respond to conventional treatments. He has a family history of migraines, and does not suffer from them personally, but has several relatives who do. His own quirk is that he gets minimal benefit from most painkillers. Like many doctors in his field, Dr. Yang suffers from migraine stigma, hence why someone so skilled is working in a rather crummy hospital.
Qualities: Master (+6) Neurologist, Expert (+4) Ren, Expert (+4) Wisdom, Good (+2) Confucian, Good (+2) Constitution, Good (+2) Family Man
Poor (-2) Migraine Stigma
Motto: "From the root grows the Way."
Confucianism is an Asian religion. Learn how to be a Confucian.
Ren, often translated as benevolence, is one of the five virtues of Confucianism. It is a more developed form of compassion and empathy expressed through mindful action.
Migraines cause extreme stigma both for people who have them and doctors who treat them. Understand how to counter the main reasons of it.
