"In the Garden of Eternal Spring"
In our favorite nursery,
there is a door in the back
of the inside store, beyond
the ones that lead outside
to the greenhouses.
It has a white frame around
two panels of stained glass.
The background is mostly peach,
decorated with branches of pink flowers
and two beautiful blue butterflies.
On most days, it simply lets out
into the nursery's back yard where
a path leads to the growing fields.
Once in a while, though,
the butterflies flap their wings,
and if you open the door then,
you will find yourself standing
in the Garden of Eternal Spring.
No one is quite sure what it is,
or even where it is, since it looks
nothing like the grounds of the nursery.
The current owner says that doors
were made by her grandmother,
and might lead to fairyland,
but that's just a guess.
I still like to look at them,
especially in winter when we
come in to buy evergreens
to make holiday wreaths.
There's always a chance
that, in the dead of winter,
I'll catch a breath of spring.
