Poem: "Under a Blood-Red Moon"

This was the linkback perk poem for the November 6, 2018 Poetry Fishbowl, originally hosted by [personal profile] dialecticdreamer. It is spillover from the October 2, 2018 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by an image prompt from [personal profile] ellenmillion and another prompt from [personal profile] zeeth_kyrah. This poem also fills the "Gothic" square in my 9-30-18 card for the Fall Bingo fest, and the "Saffron" square in my 9-5-18 Spices card for the 1000 Words or Less Bingo fest.

Warning for gore and monsters.

"Under a Blood-Red Moon"

They say unicorns are immortal.
What they don't say is what it costs.

The mare hobbles down the road
under a blood-red moon. Her golden coat
is dulled to saffron by sweat and dust.

Two arrows still protrude from the wounds,
and below them, sword slashes mar her hide.
Her horn is broken to half its former size.

Wars between immortals can get ugly.

The unicorn places one cloven hoof
in front of the other. Her head bobs
up and down with each breath.

Despite her injuries, she keeps going.
She is bloody, but undefeated.

The vampires shall not prevail.
