Poem: "Casting Badges" - The Wordsmith's Forge
The Writing & Other Projects of Elizabeth Barrette
Poem: "Casting Badges"
This poem came out of the April 3, 2018 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from [personal profile] redsixwing. It also fills the square in my 4-1-18 card for the Spring Fest Bingo. This poem has been sponsored by [personal profile] satsuma. It belongs to the series Path of the Paladins.

"Casting Badges"

Lilket the smith
makes her living by
casting pilgrim badges.

She makes all kinds,
for all different gods.

She makes them from
all kinds of metal.

She prays over
each one as she
pours the molten metal
into the waiting mold.

Whatever god or goddess
oversees the shrine for which
she makes the medals, Lilket
still prays to her own patron,
for Barzay is the God of Smiths
and from Him her power flows.

There are badges to grant
protection on the road, and those
are popular in a dangerous age
even though fewer people
dare to travel at all now.

There are badges only sold at
a given shrine to show who has
gone there to earn its favor.

It is this which brings her
a new customer, asking for
an assortment of badges to sell
at the shrine of the broken statue.

He is still clumsy in his vocation,
this waypriest with the scarred face,
but she assures him that he is doing fine
and an assortment of pilgrim badges
is just the right thing to offer.

It doesn't matter whether
the talismans are made
of tin or silver or gold.

It doesn't matter
what worldly resources
a buyer has or not.

The only things that matter
are the skill of the smith

and the faith of the pilgrim.
